Middlebury cops cleared in fatal Demarais shootout

MIDDLEBURY — State and county prosecutors have cleared two Middlebury police offices of wrongdoing in the shooting death of a man during an armed standoff on Case Street in Middlebury last Oct. 4.

 

Addison County State’s Attorney David Fenster and Attorney General William Sorrell announced on Friday that they had completed separate, independent reviews of the shooting of George Demarais.

South Street work tops short list of Middlebury public works projects

MIDDLEBURY — A substantial overhaul of water and sewer infrastructure under South Street will dominate a relatively short list of Middlebury public works projects this spring and summer.

The list, discussed on Thursday by Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner, also includes water and sewer upgrades on Charles Avenue and Water Street, along with paving projects for portions of Foote Street, Lower Foote Street and the Painter Hills subdivision.

Middlebury waterfront to get a facelift

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate alleged sex offense

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to an alleged sex offense at Middlebury Union High School on April 11. Police said some images of a juvenile had been posted on-line. Police said the matter remains under investigation.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Issued court diversion paperwork for underage drinking to a Middlebury College student on April 8. Police said they also confiscated a fake identification card from the youth.

Vermont Gas unveils five pipeline routes to N.Y. mill

SHOREHAM — Vermont Gas this week unveiled five potential routes for its proposed natural gas pipeline that would extend from Middlebury to Ticonderoga, N.Y., a plan that at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Shoreham continued to draw criticism from area residents who oppose the prospect of seeing the project running through their respective properties.

Cost to fix Middlebury town gym higher than expected

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard members got somewhat of a jolt at their meeting last Tuesday when they received an estimate that it would cost $525,000 to bring the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of the municipal gym up to modern working standards, an amount that is just $50,000 short of the $575,000 sum that officials had hoped would suffice in making the well-used building completely up to speed.

County Tire helps to stock food shelves with 'free brakes' promotion

County Tire Center’s first annual “Free brakes for food” campaign last month resulted in the donation of hundreds of pounds of food to the local emergency food shelf at Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, a Middlebury nonprofit known as HOPE.

Gas pipeline meeting in Middlebury on Monday evening

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas Systems will hold an informational meeting on Monday, April 1, in the Middlebury Municipal Gym, from 7-9 p.m. to discuss potential pipeline routes for its proposed natural gas pipeline.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman cited for DUI after roll-over accident

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Talena Jestice, 36, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following investigation of a one-car roll-over accident on Foote Street on March 22.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Referred, to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office for possible prosecution, a report of a man pushing a woman in the Buttolph Drive area on March 18.

•  Investigated a disorderly conduct complaint in the Lodge Road neighborhood on March 18.

Local monument part of a Vermont tradition

More than 6,000 people thronged the town on this cool, bright day in May 1905, some having arrived by train from as far away as Burlington and Rutland. The occasion was a special celebration of Memorial Day, a holiday that had arisen spontaneously in the years immediately after the Civil War to honor soldiers from both the North and the South.
