Opinion: Middlebury town project is a 'marriage of convenience'

Posted on February 12, 2014 |
By Craig Bingham

The town office/recreation facility proposal is a marriage of convenience between Middlebury College and the town of Middlebury. It is well known that marriages of this sort leave much to be desired. I have noted several major flaws in this proposal, any one of which justifies a rejection by the voters. I’m sure that others can find more reasons that warrant leaving this ill-conceived proposal at the altar.

Here are some of the flaws I found, in no particular order.

Opinion: Freidin changes mind on Middlebury building plan

Posted on February 10, 2014 |
By John Freidin

In the Jan. 30 Addison County Independent article about my running for Middlebury selectboard, I said I would vote yes to relocate the town offices and gym. After additional reflection, I have decided to vote no.

My interest in serving on the selectboard has always been to help heal divisions within town and to facilitate community-minded decisions, involving all who are interested.

Opinion: Not everyone can afford to pass up deal with college

Posted on January 30, 2014 |
By Peter Lebenbaum

Most of us dislike the idea of selling property, particularly property we’ve owned for a long time. However distasteful, it is a choice to be considered when confronted with unexpected expenses.

The Middlebury selectboard has asked us to consider selling property so as to meet the burden of replacing the municipal building and gym. Others ask us to consider spending more of our income to keep the property and the buildings on it.

Opinion: Middlebury board fails to give all the facts

Posted on January 30, 2014 |
By Gerry Loney

So many have said in their letters or editorials regarding the municipal building and gym that there is a need to (1) focus on the facts and not personalities, and (2) conduct the discussion in civil discourse. We have seen how difficult that can be as sometimes, even in that letter or editorial, there has been other than factual, civil discourse. But I agree that we should continue to have that goal, and separate our feelings regarding the way the process has gone from information that will help us make the important decisions that lie ahead.
