By Addison Independent Staff

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted 915-798 in favor of a $6.5 million bond to erect a new municipal building and recreation center. Voters rejected, by a 955-731 tally, a citizens’ petition that sought to direct the selectboard to instead rebuild or renovate the municipal building and gym at their current location at 94 Main St.

Voters also elected Dean George, Brian Carpenter and Laura Asermily to vacancies on the town selectboard. Incumbent Selectman Craig Bingham was defeated in his bid for a fourth consecutive term on the board.

By Gregory Dennis

Former Middlebury town planner Fred Dunnington sent along photos taken in the tropics with the underwater camera he got as a retirement present this past summer. With the temperature on Monday night hovering at zero, selectboard Chairman Dean George said at Middlebury’s town meeting he was glad someone was enjoying warm weather somewhere.

Dennis Cassidy asked the moderator, former Gov. Jim Douglas, if he was ready to declare he was running for governor again. Douglas dryly quipped that Cassidy was “out of order on many fronts.”

Opinion: Time to take down decorations

Posted on March 3, 2014 |
By Jeannie Van Order

The thing that makes holidays special and exciting is that they are finite. When a wonderful thing happens only once a year it is a precious time.

Some of us may have a crazy aunt who can always get the holiday tree up, but never seems to find the time to take it down. I have been reminded of that every day as I go over the Cross Street Bridge. What is wonderful and decorative in December becomes stale after the first week in January and by the end of February it is just downright depressing.
