Get ready to vote: Community rink could win big

MIDDLEBURY — Supporters of Addison County hockey and of Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center should be ready to act on April 13 and 14.

That’s when they can vote online between midnight on that Friday and 11 a.m. on that Saturday (that's all day next Friday and most of Saturday morning) to help the Memorial Sports Center win $150,000 to complete long-planned upgrades to the rink, including public restrooms, a “family-friendly headed viewing area,” and an elevator.

Middlebury Police Log: Local man held on $1,000 bail after domestic assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Glenn Fowler, 54, of Middlebury for domestic assault, stemming from an alleged incident in the Halladay Road area on April 1.

Police said Fowler was lodged that evening for lack of $1,000 bail.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Referred to state police on March 26 an allegation that a Middlebury Union Middle School student was being exposed to drugs at a friend’s house.

Beauty or blight? Middlebury solar farm plan draws mixed reactions

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard’s March 27 public hearing on a proposed 4.99-megawatt solar farm off Halladay Road provided further evidence that when it comes to solar panels, the words “beauty” and “blight’ can be used to describe the same thing.

It all depends on whose eyes and which property lines are involved.

Welch touts $3.3 billion to battle opioid addiction, decries stalemate over gun safety

Midd grad Andrew Forsthoefel learns big lessons during epic walk

MIDDLEBURY — On the same day that students across the nation quit their classrooms to protest gun violence, prompting debates among their supporters over “walking out” vs. “walking up,” the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury welcomed a walker of epic accomplishment.

Andrew Forsthoefel walked from Pennsylvania to California after he graduated from Middlebury College in 2011. Last year he published a book about the experience, “Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time.”

Hannaford Career Center works with local shops to train techs

MIDDLEBURY — On Mainelli Road, off Exchange Street, is the Hannaford Career Center’s North Campus, where three Automotive Technology programs are currently being offered. In years past, there were two offerings, but interest in the program is on the rise and administrators saw the need to add a third section this spring.

ACTR receives donation to help transport folks to opioid treatment

MIDDLEBURY ? Neat Repeats Resale Shop recently donated $750 to Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) to help fund its opioid crisis work. Demand for ACTR’s transportation services to opioid medication-assisted treatment centers is outstripping ACTR’s grant funding, even as the transportation agency works with care providers and the state to help address this exponentially growing crisis.
