Editorial: Vote 'Yes' on UD-3 lease of land for town rec building

Voters of the seven-town UD-3 school district will decide next Tuesday whether it is prudent to lease 2.5 acres of land to the town of Middlebury on which to site the town’s municipal gym. The UD-3 board earlier endorsed the project, which would also include a $400,000 bond vote for a 2,000-square-foot addition onto the building to be used for Middlebury Union High and Middle School sporting events.

Opinion: Another woman needed on board

According to 2010 census data, women make up about 52 percent of Middlebury’s population. Instead of having a single woman on our seven-member selectboard, wouldn’t it be nice if Middlebury had a selectboard that more fairly represented its population?

Opinion: Access key in town office plan

As I read the problems and the key features of the town office and recreation project, I became a stronger supporter of the project. Why? ADA accessibility.

I am a physical therapist, and the concept of accessibility for all people is at the core of my beliefs. You may think it is not important to you, but those who need accessible buildings don’t get to make that choice on whether it is important or not. It just is.

Men's hoop to host NESCAC quarter final

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team split two NESCAC road games this past weekend and has earned the No. 3 seed for the league tournament.

The Panthers finished the regular season at 16-8, 6-4 in NESCAC play, and will host No. 6 Hamilton (14-10, 5-5 NESCAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be a rematch of a Feb. 2 game at Hamilton won by the Continentals, 76-74.

Middlebury Police Log: Man allegedly assaults woman with box spring

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a reported domestic dispute at a Jackson Lane residence on Feb. 16. Police said a woman alleged that her ex-boyfriend had struck her in the head with a box spring. Police and prosecutors are reviewing the case for potential criminal charges.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Received a report of some men shouting sexual innuendoes at a woman in the Mill Street parking lot on Feb. 10. Police said they were unable to locate the men.

No ACSU consolidation for now

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union will not go through a formal process to consolidate its schools or governance structure — at least for now.

After a 3.5-year process, the ACSU Governance Study Committee on Monday issued its final report on the notion of forming a “Regional Education District (RED)” encompassing two or more of the seven school districts within the supervisory union.
