Middlebury eyed for methadone clinic

MIDDLEBURY — State and local health care administrators are studying the possibility of opening a methadone clinic in Middlebury, a plan that has some local officials concerned about the prospect of such a service producing a spike in drug-related crime in Addison County’s shire town.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid, similar to morphine. It is used as pain reliever, but also as part of a treatment plan to reduce withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs.

Locals add voice to single-payer health care debate

MIDDLEBURY — One by one, they took to the microphones on Monday in all corners of the state to give legislators an earful about plans to revamp Vermont’s health care system.

Though separated by the many miles between the 15 Vermont Interactive Television (VIT) sites, the dozens of speakers primarily spoke in a unified voice tinged with individual health care horror stories. Their message to Vermont lawmakers: Adopt a universal access, single-payer system.

Hospital files electronic records

MIDDLEBURY — Work is under way to turn the Middlebury area into one of the most connected communities in Vermont, when it comes to medical records. By early 2012, Middlebury residents will experience the seamless transfer of information between their physician’s office and Porter Medical Center, increasing efficiency and improving patient care.
