Eric Davis: Milne hoping for instant-runoff win

Posted on November 26, 2014 |
By Eric L. Davis

For the third time in 12 years, Vermont’s Legislature will elect the governor in January, because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote on Election Day. Vermont is the only state in the nation where the Legislature can elect the governor. This provision has been in the Vermont Constitution for over 200 years.

Opinion: Sharpe grateful to local voters

Posted on November 19, 2014 |
By Dave Sharpe

Thank you to everyone who worked on my successful campaign to return to the Vermont House. I am humbled by the support I have received from the voters and regard it as an important job to represent them in the Legislature.

I recognize that it will be a very difficult session with restricted revenues and that the wages of Vermonters have not kept up with inflation over the last few decades. I am looking forward to serving Vermonters in my district and throughout the state.

Rep. Dave Sharpe

Opinion: Secret ballots a very bad idea

Posted on November 19, 2014 |

I appreciated the recent opinion letter from my Democratic counterpart, Bob Zeliff, regarding the outcome of the Milne/Shumlin race and the necessity of a legislative vote to determine the next governor.

Mullin tops the field in 2014 campaign funding

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the candidates in the county’s four contested House districts raised in excess of $9,000 in an effort to get elected this past Nov. 4, according to campaign finance records available online through the Vermont Secretary of State.

Those records, covering campaign expenditures through Nov. 1, show the latest fund-raising totals for the candidates — including the size and origin of the contributions in excess of $100, as well as how many donations they received of less than $100.

Opinion: Fisher's contributions at Statehouse appreciated

Posted on November 17, 2014 |
By Kelly Cummings

Dear Rep. Fisher,

I write to you with much sadness but also much gratitude and hope.

I would like to thank you for your incredible, good and solid work on health care.

I admire your tenacity just as much as your compassion. And I so appreciate your service.

I hope you know that what you have helped set in motion has not been in vain.

Opinion: Baser thankful for election help

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Fred Baser

The evening before Election Day, I told my wife, Marian, that no matter what the outcome I had won. This feeling came from the support I have received from so many people in the four towns of Addison-4.

When you run for office, especially in a hotly contested race, you have to put yourself out there, and at times, you are a bit vulnerable. Having people write letters of support, donate their hard-earned cash and assist in your door-to-door efforts is huge and humbling.

Opinion: Van Wyck responds to criticism about voting record

Posted on November 12, 2014 |
By Warren Van Wyck

There is a saying that you can’t judge a book by its cover. That’s often the case for an act and its title in the Vermont Legislature. So it is with Act No. 31 (H.99), an act relating to equal pay. Equal pay has been a Vermont law since 2002 (and federal law before that) and I support equal pay for equal work. Act 31, however, is primarily about imposing various other mandates on employers and contractors in Vermont. This is the reason that I voted against it.

Opinion: Candidates' actions hurt business

Posted on October 31, 2014 |
By Paul J. Kerin

As a child growing up in Vermont I gave my parents ample opportunity to teach me  life lessons. To this day I carry with me much of what I learned. Recently I had the chance to relive one of those lessons. The lesson being, “how to take the measure of a man.” The answer, watch his actions when he doesn’t think people are looking.

Opinion: Fisher, Sharpe deserve re-election

Posted on October 31, 2014 |
By Marcia Liotard

My husband and I retired to Vermont in July ’06. We first met Mike Fisher and Dave Sharpe the following March at the Starksboro Town Meeting. Since then we’ve gotten to know both men better. We find them to be thoughtful, fair and honest men, who care about their constituents. Dave is now the ranking member of the House Ways & Means Committee, and Mike is the Chairman of the House Health Care Committee. Both jobs bring extra work and greater responsibility.
