Maritime museum tests new shipwreck viewing technology

FERRISBURGH — Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Maritime Research Institute is exploring an exciting new way to study historic shipwrecks and to share them with the public. Vermont Public Television on Sunday, Feb. 3, aired an on-water tour and interview with LCMM Executive Co-Director Adam Kane on the show “Out and About.”

Middlebury College dedicates new vessel for lake research

FERRISBURGH — After a decade of planning, a $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation and a 8,000-mile sea journey from a boat-builder in Washington State to the Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain, Middlebury College’s new research vessel has finally arrived home.

The R/V David Folger, named for a beloved geology professor who launched the college’s marine studies and lake research component of his department’s curriculum, was officially dedicated this past Saturday.

Schooner brings piece of history to Vergennes

VERGENNES — When Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM) officials were planning this year’s four-month trip through New York, Canada and Vermont for the museum’s replica canal schooner, the Lois McClure, there was little debate about the final stop.

The journey through canals, rivers and Lake Ontario, which ends this coming Friday, has recognized the region’s pivotal role in the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States, which had recently won its freedom from the crown — and the 200 years of peace that followed.
