By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — As the state Agency of Agriculture debates whether to implement new regulations on farmers in the Missisquoi Bay watershed in an effort to cut down on phosphorus pollution, farmers in Addison County say more regulation is not the answer.

“The regulations that we have, including the Accepted Agricultural Practices, are adequate,” said Bill Moore, legislative director for the Vermont Farm Bureau.

Community Forum: Don't just blame farmers for water pollution

By Emerson Lynn

This week's writer is Emerson Lynn, editor of the St. Albans Messenger

Franklin County has long held the distinction of producing more milk than any other county in Vermont, or New England. Dairy farmers have been to Franklin County what the Red Sox are to Boston.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Middlebury College students met in a sixth floor Bicentennial Hall classroom one recent morning to plan their hunt for bacteria. But just as important is that they learn processes and habits of mind that will make them good engineers, mathematicians and scientists.

Opinion: Bray has made brilliant argument

Posted on July 7, 2014 |
By George Jaeger

Sen. Chris Bray’s brilliantly argued letter in the June 26 edition of this paper goes to the heart of the Phase II pipeline issue. This Quebec project, as he writes, is about the private use of the proposed pipeline by the International Paper Co. and therefore deserves neither a Certificate of Public Good nor the right to eminent domain.

Editorial: National water trails system could aid Lake Champlain

Posted on June 26, 2014 |
By Angelo Lynn

Here’s an idea that could help the water quality in Lake Champlain. Make the lake part of the newly designated National Water Trails System. The upside is it could bring federal aid to the cause. The downside is it would inevitably make the lake more crowded and less enjoyable for those Vermonters (and others) who recreate on the lake.

Still, if it’s an idea that could help clean up lake pollution and improve the water quality, it should be seriously considered.
