VUHS boys' lax knocks off Eagles

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ lacrosse team spotted visiting rival Mount Abraham two early goals on Tuesday, but outscored the Eagles by 7-1 in the two middle periods on the way to an 11-8 victory in the opener for both squads.

The Eagles earned a 7-2 edge in shots on goal in the opening quarter. But VUHS junior goalie Broc Clark held the fort after Eagle senior middie Gus Catlin and sophomore middie Owein LaBarr, from junior attacker Lucas Richter, gave Mount Abe a 2-0 lead in the first 4:34.

Tiger girls' lax tops Rutland in first game

RUTLAND — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team won its season opener on Friday, April 10, 12-7 at Rutland, after two games earlier in the week were postponed.

The Tigers’ April 14 game at BFA-St. Albans was also postponed. No makeup dates have been announced, leaving the Tigers’ next regularly scheduled game an April 28 date at Mount Mansfield.

At Rutland, the Tigers started slowly.

“We got off to a rocky start, down 0-3 in the first 5:35 of play, but settled defensively,” said Coach Kelley Higgins.

Panther women's lacrosse declaws Bobcats; No. 1 Trinity next

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team coasted past visiting Bates on Saturday, forcing 19 turnovers in an 18-6 win. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, improved to 10-1, 6-1 NESCAC, while the Bobcats dropped to 6-8, 2-7 NESCAC.

The Panthers remain tied with No. 1 Trinity atop the NESCAC standings. Trinity will host the Panthers on Saturday. Middlebury was set to visit third-place and ninth-ranked Hamilton (10-2, 6-2) on Wednesday.

Tiger boys' lacrosse starts strong

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse season started well on Saturday, when the Tigers breezed past traditional rival Woodstock, 14-2, in a game moved from Woodstock to Middlebury College’s Alumni Stadium due to weather and field conditions.

Men's lacrosse wins two, climbs in rankings

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team posted a pair of three-goal home wins vs. NESCAC opponents last week to improve to 9-2, 6-1 in league play. The Panthers were ranked No. 7 in last week’s NCAA Division III poll.
On April 1, the Panthers used a decisive five-goal run in the fourth quarter to defeat Hamilton, 11-8. The Continentals are 7-4, 3-4 in league play.

Women's lacrosse wins twice, now ranked 2nd

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team won a pair of recent games, including one key NESCAC contest, to improve to 9-1, 5-1 in league play. They are now ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III and will host league foe Bates on Saturday at noon.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers defeated host Colby, 7-5, in a battle of nationally ranked teams — Colby (9-2, 4-2 NESCAC) entered the game ranked No. 2. The victory also avenged two 2014 Middlebury losses to the Mules, one in the NESCAC tournament.

Men's lacrosse deals Amherst first setback

AMHERST, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team split two games last week, including a win over a highly ranked NESCAC foe.

The Panthers carried a 7-2 record, 4-1 in league play, into a Wednesday home game vs. NESCAC opponent Hamilton. They will next host another league game, Colby at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

This past Saturday, Middlebury handed Amherst (8-1, 3-1) its first loss of the season, 17-11. The Jeffs entered that contest ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, while the Panthers were 13th.

Men's lacrosse is gelling: Panthers top Polar Bears

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team’s sixth straight victory came more easily than the previous five.

On Saturday, Coach Dave Campbell’s Panthers took a 6-0 lead over visiting Bowdoin in the first quarter and coasted to a 13-7 victory to improve to 6-1, 3-1 in NESCAC play. Middlebury’s only loss of the season was in the opening game to undefeated NCAA Division III and NESCAC champion Tufts.

It's official: Livesay to take the women's lacrosse reins from Foote

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College confirmed on Wednesday that former Panther All-American and Middlebury Union High School three-sport standout Kate Perine Livesay will become the school’s next women’s lacrosse head coach.

Longtime current head coach Missy Foote announced this winter that she would leave her post after this season, and Livesay resigned as Trinity College women’s lacrosse head coach to assist Foote this spring.
