Vt. newspapers from as far back as 1700s are now online

MIDDLESEX — Secretary of State Jim Condos and State Archivist Tanya Marshall announced on May 29 that early Vermont newspapers have been added to Newspapers.com and can be researched online for free by residents.

Vermont state historic sites transport you to the past

Vermont is a history buff’s paradise. A couple great repositories of American history have now reopened for the summer. Three State Historic Sites — Chimney Point in Addison, Mount Independence in Orwell, and Hubbardton Battlefield — opened for the 2018 season on Saturday. Plan an outing this summer to explore Vermont’s interesting history and beauty spots. These sites also host a variety of engaging programs.

Ilsley talk to explore the friendship between FDR and Churchill

MIDDLEBURY — University of Vermont History Professor Emeritus Mark A. Stoler will examine the important personal relationship between Britain’s Prime Minister and America’s President during their World War II alliance in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury on June 6, at 7 p.m. His talk, “Churchill and Roosevelt: The Personal in the Partnership,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. The talk was rescheduled from May 2.

1935 murder victims buried; mystery persists

EAST MIDDLEBURY — It was a brisk day last fall when Walt Ducharme stood at the side of a freshly dug grave at the Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury. The mortal remains of three people were at last given a final resting place after reposing in nondescript boxes in an office cabinet for 80 years.

But with eternal rest does not always come closure.

Sheldon Museum, Career Center research history of trapping boats

MIDDLEBURY — The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, in cooperation with the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, has an innovative research partnership taking place throughout the fall 2014 semester. Working with a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program, students will conduct research on the traditions of local trapping boats.

Rokeby to exhibit 100-year-old NYC postcards by Vt. artist

FERRISBURGH — As Rokeby Museum Director Jane Williamson researched artist Rachael Robinson Elmer, who grew up at the Rokeby homestead in the late 1800s, she read of a mysterious painting. The depiction of New York’s City Hall painted in the Impressionist style had been rejected from a series Elmer created for a group of 12 postcards in the early 1900s, and it had not been seen since.

What Williamson didn’t expect was to find the very painting in the Rokeby archives, where it had been nestled since Elmer’s death in 1919.

Retiring Mt. Abe History teacher to leave students thinking about current events

BRISTOL — Posters line the walls of Rick Desorda’s classroom. They were made by the Mount Abraham Union High School history teacher’s students, and explain key terms and figures from the Vietnam War — the Tet Offensive, Lyndon B. Johnson, the Silent Majority, Kent State.

For the students, these people, places and events mark a distant time in the past, decades before they were born. But when Desorda was their age, events from halfway around the world figured greatly in his future.

Clippings: The importance of teaching history

When I went home for breaks during college, I would sub at the schools I attended growing up. Sometimes teachers wrote detailed lesson plans, other times nothing — leaving me with 80 minutes of instructional time and a classroom of students.
