Uncovering the Underground Railroad quilt-code myth at Rokeby

Historian Kate Clifford Larson will speak about the enduring myth surrounding quilt patterns and the Underground Railroad. The illustrated lecture will be held Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. at Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh, in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibit “Fabric of Emancipation” curated by Harlem Needle Arts.

MIDDLEBURY — In the late 1980s, as Mikhail Gorbachev led the Soviet Union through a series of major political reforms known as glasnost (sometimes translated as “openness”) newspapers across the United States began reporting on a burgeoning diplomatic effort that, if successful, could signal a change in the course of the Cold War.

“Unprecedented,” reported the Associated Press.

A “radical departure,” said The New York Times.

Listen and learn about Vermont's musical ladies at the DAR museum

This Saturday, singer and researcher Linda Radtke along with pianist Arthur Zorn will present an hour of music and history, celebrating the contributions of Vermont women to the traditions of parlor songs, women’s club music contests and social reform efforts. The concert will take place at the John Strong DAR Mansion Museum in Addison at 1 p.m.

Oceana Judah, Diane Martin, Edwina Flint and Helen Hartness Flanders (pictured below) represent the richness and invention of the female composers included in the sheet music collection of the Vermont Historical Society.

'A real crisis': Deadly Spanish flu pandemic hit Addison County 100 years ago

ADDISON COUNTY — One hundred years ago this fall an unwelcome visitor came roaring through Northern New England and made a death-dealing stop in Addison County.

The noxious traveler was the Spanish influenza pandemic, which was in the middle of its two-year tear around the globe when it paid visits to Middlebury, Orwell, Shoreham, Bristol and other area towns.

Mount Independence schedules 'Hike into History'

ORWELL — Stephen Zeoli will lead a special guided “Hike into History” on Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell. The walk runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and is included in regular site admission of $5 for adults and free for those under 15.

Learn about the stirring story of Mount Independence and its important role in the American Revolution and in the making of the nation. It was built as an American defense of New England against the British in 1776-77, and then occupied by the British and Germans from July to November 1777.
