Opinion: Local man runs for governor as Coffee Party candidate

Posted on August 18, 2014 |
By Rustan Swenson

Many of our nation’s primary industries have been greatly diminished with some almost ceasing to exist. Foreign flags fly triumphantly over countless commercial center structures and prominent, formerly American, factories. Many high-skilled laborers are now employed by foreign-owned corporations.

Milne, Scott_0525.JPG

ST. ALBANS — Republican gubernatorial Scott Milne is a candidate still in the process of becoming a candidate.

The 55-year-old Pomfret resident freely admits that he is still developing an understanding of many of the issues and doesn’t yet have specific policy proposals. They’re in the works.

Eric Davis: Media must hold Shumlin accountable

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Eric Davis

Gov. Peter Shumlin is unlikely to face vigorous opposition when campaigning for a third term this fall. The Progressives decided not to nominate a gubernatorial candidate. The Republicans could not find a mainstream candidate until right at the filing deadline, when Scott Milne announced he would enter the race.

The Republicans were unable to find candidates for many offices. The GOP recruited candidates for only two of the six statewide offices, 15 of the 30 Senate seats, and 79 of the 150 House seats.

A more vibrant GOP voice would make Vt. stronger

Posted on June 5, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As the deadline for filing for political office in Vermont nears its June 12 cutoff, the Vermont Republican party is largely missing in action. A gubernatorial candidate is yet to be named. No notable party leaders have stepped to the fore for down-party offices, and while there is talk about working to take legislative seats, there has been little action. By comparison, the Progressive Party’s filing for 21 statewide seats and offices is far more impressive and makes the GOP look weak and disorganized.

Opinion: Gubernatorial candidate takes stand on gas pipeline

Posted on May 29, 2014 |
By Emily Peyton

While I was going about Middlebury today, I stopped into a sporting store where I met the shop owner. Once he realized I am running for governor he laid into me for some ”appalling” homemade signage that had over-wintered and was now “littering” the roadside. So I am writing in humility to apologize for the eyesore of that signage carrying my name on it, and for the fact that it was there in the off-season.

Editorial: Lisman's choice opens up new role for Campaign Vermont

Posted on May 22, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In state political news, the biggest announcement of the week was Bruce Lisman reporting that he would not be running for governor against Democrat incumbent Peter Shumlin. That seemingly gives Shumlin clear sailing for another two-year term. Considering the controversial issues at stake — paying for health care reform, restructuring school governance and getting school spending under control, and keeping a lid on state taxes, to name a few — it’s surprising that a strong opponent hasn’t yet emerged.

Shumlin would sign End of Life Choices bill

Posted on February 14, 2013 |
By John Flowers

BRISTOL — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Monday boosted his education reform plans (See story, Page 1A), reiterated his support for a bill that would allow terminally ill Vermonters to end their own lives, and explained why he favors bringing the F-35 fighter jet to Burlington for use by the Vermont National Guard.

At a legislative lunch in Bristol and during an interview with the Addison Independent, the issues Shumlin discussed included:

Gov. Douglas pens autobiography

Posted on May 24, 2012 |
By John Flowers

jimdouglas6789.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Former Vermont Gov. James Douglas has penned an autobiography in which he touches upon the highlights of almost 40 years in Vermont politics. In the book, due to be released before year’s end, Douglas offers some candid thoughts on some of the state and federal lawmakers with whom he worked during a political career that he says he has no interest in rekindling.

The underlying theme of the Middlebury Republican’s book will be “How can a Republican succeed in Vermont?”
