Ocean’s 8 — Running Time: 1:50 — Rating: PG-13

What’s the test of a good comedy? In the case of “Ocean’s 8” you know you’re having fun when you feel yourself rooting for the bad guys. When does that happen in this one? In the first scene. As Sandra Bullock’s Debbie Ocean concocts a grand lie to convince the parole boss to let her out of jail, we realize she has already created an entire plan for her next heist. She invites us on board and we jump.

Cinematic fantasy fans often cite Walt Disney’s “Snow White” (1937) as the first full-length animated feature film. But more than a decade earlier, German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger produced “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” (1926), a feature-length animated fantasy that thrilled audiences worldwide. The film will be shown with live accompaniment at the Brandon Town Hall at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.

Movie review: Boundaries

movie review Henry in car.jpg

Boundaries — Running Time: 1:44 — Rating: R

“Boundaries” is a family story shot through with smiles and a bucket of eccentricity. With lesser actors, this movie could have fallen flat. But the truly good cast makes it jump alive to the point that we roll between feeling sadness and affection.

Movie review: The Seagull

movie review The Seagull.jpg

The Seagull — Running Time: 1:38 — Rating: PG-13

Let’s get to the tough news first — and then to the good. Anton Chekhov’s novel “The Seagull” has been made into a movie with a big cast that lasts just one hour and 38 minutes. That is far too short a time for us to absorb, much less to understand all the characters. Result? We struggle to follow them but are foiled by director Michael Mayer’s determination to shift scenes with the speed of shotgun pellets.

Adrift Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin movie review.jpg

Adrift — Running Time: 1:38 — Rating: PG-13

Early warning: I loved and admired “Adrift” without any reservation and am thoroughly pleased to be able to write about it. Director Baltasar Kormakur delivers the emotions of a young couple as they fall in love and then as they endure the massive hurricane of 1983 at sea.

Movie review: Life of the party

movie review 5 31 18 Life o Party.jpg

Life of the Party — Running Time: 1:45 — Rating: PG-13

“Life of the Party” wins a Gold Star in the race for being the worst movie of the year. It was released with a swish of pre-release publicity that promised Melissa McCarthy and her director husband Ben Falcone were coming up with a fine comedy. In a year that so far has given us relatively few standout movies along with a mountain of weak ones, this one goes to the bottom of the heap.

BRANDON — Silent film with live music returns to Brandon Town Hall on Saturday, June 9, at 7 p.m. with “Steamboat Bill Jr.” (1928), a classic comedy starring Buster Keaton, one of the era’s top performers. The series allows local movie-goers to experience silent film the way its makers originally intended: on the big screen, with live music, and with an audience.

“If you put the experience back together, you can see why movies caused such excitement,” said Dennis Marden, president of the Friends of Brandon Town Hall.

movie review Book Club.jpg

Book Club— Running Time: 1:44 — Rating: PG-13

Odds are about 50/50 as to whether the public will like or not like “Book Club.” Four strong, independent women have enjoyed becoming a book club together. When the selections become too boring for Vivian (Jane Fonda), she suggests they read “50 Shades of Grey,” which they do with a combination of reluctance and interest that moves them back into being interested in the dating world.
