Otter field hockey pulls out another victory; limited team numbers not a factor

BRANDON — So far this season for the Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team, eleven equals eight.

With rare exceptions when she puts a JV player in for a couple minutes at a time, Coach Stacey Edmunds-Brickell has asked her 11 starters to play 60 minutes of every game — that’s her entire roster.

Mt. Abe field hockey evens its record

BURLINGTON — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team blanked host Burlington on Friday, 2-0, to move back to .500.

The victory was the second straight for the 5-5 Eagles. The Eagles took charge against the 1-9 Seahorses by scoring twice in the first half, with the goals coming from Jackie Reiss and Ellie Gevry.

The Eagles will look to build on the momentum at home vs. Mount Mansfield on Wednesday and at Middlebury on Friday.

Tiger field hockey ties Mt. Mansfield again

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School field hockey team and visiting Mount Mansfield settled for a 2-2 tie on Saturday, the second time this season the two foes have finished with that result.

Makayla Foster and Sara Kelley scored for the 5-3-2 Tigers, who received an eight-save performance from goalie Baily Ryan. Julia Preston stopped five shots for the 3-5-2 Cougars.

MUHS will try to slow down undefeated Essex on the road on Wednesday, and will host rival Mount Abraham (5-5) at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Tiger field hockey rides late surge

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School field hockey team started and finished strong on Tuesday, and that was more than enough to carry the Tigers past visiting Burlington, 6-3.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead early in the second half, but watched the Seahorses erupt for three unanswered goals. After a timeout by Coach Megan Sears, MUHS countered with three goals in the final 7:01, including two by junior wing Makayla Foster.

Panther field hockey takes two

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College field hockey team picked up two wins this past weekend to improve to 6-1, 3-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers will visit league foe Trinity on Saturday after a Wednesday date at No. 7 Skidmore. They were ranked No. 5 in last week’s NCAA Division III poll.

On Saturday, Middlebury scored twice in the first nine minutes and went on to a 3-1 NESCAC victory over host Colby (4-4, 0-4 NESCAC).

Otter field hockey blanks Springfield

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team defeated visiting Springfield on Tuesday, 2-0, to improve to 7-2 heading into Saturday’s 11 a.m. homecoming game vs. Mount Anthony.

Kylee Bissette gave OV the lead at 0:48 of the first half by converting a Courtney Bushey assist. Allison Lowell added the insurance goal midway through the second half, with an assist from Maia Edmunds.

Mt. Abe field hockey edges Colchester, snaps streak

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team snapped its five-game losing streak on Tuesday by topping visiting Colchester, 1-0.

The Eagles earned a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal, but only Kennady Roy, with an assist from Bailey Sherwin, put a ball past Laker goalie Abby Ladd. Ladd stopped 13 shots in the losing cause as her team dropped to 0-8.

Mount Abe goalie Danielle Morse stopped the only shot she saw as the Eagles improved to 4-5.

Field hockey: Otters and Eagles lose, Tigers split

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school field hockey in the latter half of last week, Middlebury split two games, Otter Valley lost a close game on the road, and Mount Abraham lost two more close contests.

TIGERS

On Wednesday, host Champlain Valley (5-1-1) edged MUHS, 1-0, in overtime. All three of the Tigers’ losses have come in OT. Shots on goal were even: CVU goalie Tashia Pashby-Rockwood made six saves, while the Tigers’ Baily Ryan stopped five shots.

Otter field hockey wins sixth straight

MANCHESTER — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team blanked host Burr & Burton on Tuesday, 2-0, to improve to 6-1.

OV pitched its fourth straight shutout and won its sixth straight game to set up a Friday matchup at undefeated Division III power Bellows Falls. As of Tuesday, OV was third in D-II behind Rice (6-1) and U-32 (5-1) in the Vermont Principals’ Association quality-point standings.

No. 1 Bowdoin tips Panther field hockey

MIDDLEBURY — In a Saturday battle of top NCAA Division III college field hockey teams, visiting Bowdoin scored twice in a span of 1:29 during the final minutes to overtake Middlebury and win, 2-1.

The No. 1 Polar Bears, the defending NCAA champions, improved to 4-0. The Panthers, who entered the contest at No. 4, dropped to 4-1. They will visit Colby on Saturday.
