MONTPELIER — A recent study by The Trust for Public Land in cooperation with fellow members of the Vermont Forest Partnership quantitatively demonstrates that Vermonters benefit from the state’s investment in land conservation, which generates measurable economic returns. Conserved lands provide valuable natural goods and services such as water quality protection, flood prevention, food production, wildlife habitat, and air pollution removal — all important to Vermont’s economy and jobs.

Beaver Baffle - Rogers photo.jpg

MONTPELIER — To prevent flooding on nearby roads, the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department recently completed construction of 19 water control devices on beaver dams in locations throughout Vermont. Known as ‘beaver baffles’ these devices allow some water to pass through the dam without breaching the dam and destroying the wetland.

MIDDLEBURY — As residents seek respite from scorching summer temperatures at local swimming holes, pesky rumors about water cleanliness — or lack thereof — can inject unease into otherwise bliss-filled afternoons. Talk of waterborne E. coli is particularly quick to cause alarm.

Thanks to the Addison County River Watch Collaborative, though, swimmers wary of foul waters can find monthly updates on E. coli levels in local waters that can help determine which swimming holes are safest.

State makes it easier to track DEC permits

Posted on July 12, 2018 |
By Nick Garber

MONTPELIER —The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in January put in place a new system intended to make it easier for citizens to comment on projects and track their own applications.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of state government, the legislature passed an act in May 2016 requiring the DEC to standardize the public notice and comment procedures in its permit process. The new Environmental Notice Bulletin (ENB), launched earlier this year, is intended to do just that.

Posted on July 5, 2018 |
By James Finn

MIDDLEBURY — In early June, U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee Vice-Chair Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) secured $4 million in additional funding for use by the Lake Champlain Basin Program in its work to protect and restore Lake Champlain.

As the EPA-funded program works through how to best distribute funds to organizations around the state, local environmentalists and staffers are excited about the potential the funding will bring for new lake restoration projects around Addison County.

SALISBURY — Most kids learn about good environmental stewardship through school books, documentaries and/or their parents.

Students at the Salisbury Community School have been doing their environmental learning where it matters most — outdoors, where they’ve been picking up litter in their community and pulling invasive weeds from nearby Lake Dunmore.

Ban the bag? Duo seeks end to plastic bags in Middlebury

Posted on May 7, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

MIDDLEBURY — If they were balled up to the size of tennis balls, the disposable plastic shopping bags used in Middlebury every year would fill up more than three tractor-trailers — maybe even as many as six.

Few of those bags stayed balled up, however, and most of them find their way to landfills.

Middlebury resident Amy McAninch and Middlebury College sophomore Amelia Miller have proposed a solution to this excess waste: a townwide ban on single-use, carry-out plastic bags.
