Racine making a second run at top

ST. ALBANS — Given the state’s fiscal challenges, his four primary opponents aren’t being realistic in what they are telling voters, according to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Racine.

“I think they’re living in campaign land, which says, nothing bad can ever happen with a $100 million deficit. We can fix it without it costing us anything at all. There’s too much of it in Washington,” Racine said.

Sheldon emphasizes health reform

EAST MIDDLEBURY — State Senate candidate Amy Sheldon believes additional health care reforms will not only create more fit Vermonters but will also provide a potent panacea for the economic ills the state is facing.

“Health care is a huge driver in the cost of public education and government services,” said Sheldon, an East Middlebury Democrat. “If we can find a way to make (health care) more affordable for all Vermonters, we will solve a number of problems.”

Hoffer seeks to improve state government performance as auditor

BURLINGTON — In the Democratic primary race for state auditor against Sen. Ed Flanagan, private entrepreneur Doug Hoffer, 59, poses one question for Democratic voters: “Which of us is better able to beat (incumbent and Republican) Tom Salmon?”

That single question has made Democrats, Progressives and Independents around the state take notice of his candidacy and his credentials.

Democrats hold debate at the fair

NEW HAVEN — The five Democratic candidates for governor squared off at Addison County Fair and Field Days last Thursday evening, in what will be one of their last meetings before the primary elections on Aug. 24.

In the televised debate, reporters from WCAX-TV, WDEV radio and Vermont Business Magazine took turns questioning the four current or former senators and current secretary of state on their proposed policies and experiences.

Bartlett makes a bid for governor

MIDDLEBURY — Back in 1992 when Lamoille County Sen. Susan Bartlett told her husband, Bill, that she wanted to run for the state Senate, he was supportive, to say the least.

“He said, ‘That’s the best idea you’ve had in a long time,’” Bartlett related during a recent interview. “And we came out of nowhere and won.”

Scott advocates changes in education, human services

ST. ALBANS — After 10 years in the Vermont State Senate Republican Phil Scott is seeking the job of lieutenant governor.

“I first ran for the Legislature because I felt Vermonters and the business community was not being well represented,” Scott said in a recent interview. A native Vermonter and resident of , Scott was born in Barre and has been a partner in Dubois Construction in Rutland for 25 years. He serves Washington County in the Senate.

Welch promotes green legislation

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., wants to harness the power of Vermont’s growing renewable energy industry to fuel more “green” initiatives at the national level.

Welch was in Addison County last week as part of an “energy tour,” surveying local businesses’ renewable energy initiatives and products. His stops included Nathaniel Electronics in Vergennes, which is working on new solar technology, and the Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, home to one of the state’s largest and most successful manure-to-energy power systems.
