MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont’s senior senator, said if re-elected next month he will continue to work to secure a waiver for Vermont to enact more sweeping health care reforms sooner than the 2017 timeline mandated under current federal law.

“The way the law is written almost begs for some areas of experimentation, provided you still have the basic health protections that were written into it,” the Middlesex Democrat said during a recent interview at the Addison Independent.

WHITING — Whiting Republican Joy Jones hadn’t given serious thought to running for the Addison-Rutland-1 House seat until a week before the Aug. 24 primary, when she was unable to recruit a challenger to face incumbent Rep. Will Stevens, an independent who lives in Shoreham.

The folks she approached explained they were too busy with work, family and other commitments to run for office and, if elected, serve five months in Montpelier. The Addison-Rutland-1 district includes Orwell, Shoreham, Benson and Whiting.

Politically Thinking: Local elections crucial statewide

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By Eric L. Davis

Next to the contest for governor, the most important Vermont elections this fall are those for the 180 seats in the Legislature. Republicans want to pick up seats in the House, so that chamber could sustain the governor’s vetoes if Brian Dubie is elected. Discussion about taxes is not based on facts

There is much that could be said about the Lt. Governor’s economic development plan and his recent press event announcing his economic plan, but for now I want to comment briefly about one of Mr. Dubie’s statements. He said that Vermont’s state income tax was higher than Maine, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

This statement is terribly misleading and should be corrected.

MIDDLEBURY — The Aug. 24 primary provided a lot of fireworks, but Addison County saw arguably its biggest political bombshell detonate two days after the election.

Recount’s fine, but keep it rollin’

With gubernatorial candidate Peter Shumlin picking up five votes in the unofficial vote canvassing by the Secretary of State’s office as of late Friday afternoon, he now leads Doug Racine in the Democratic primary race by 197 votes. Still, it is a thin margin and by no means a done deal considering the potential for errors.

Tuesday’s Democratic primary race for governor goes into the history books as one of the most competitive and closest with five excellent candidates — four of whom had near-equal support across all sectors of the state. With Senate President Pro Tempore Peter Shumlin leading Sen. Doug Racine by just 182 votes at 25 percent of the vote total, and Sec. of State Deb.
