Lincoln residents OK school spending plan

Posted on May 6, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — Voters in Lincoln on Monday night approved a $1.6 million 2010-2011 school year spending plan for the Lincoln Community School.

The budget required a two-part vote because per-pupil spending at the school last year exceeded the state average, and this year’s budget is greater than last year’s budget adjusted for inflation. Voters first approved $1,599,757 in spending in a paper ballot vote, with 69 voting in favor and 30 against.

In a subsequent voice vote, residents also approved the additional $9,778 in spending deemed necessary by the board.

Bridport backs school budget

Posted on May 6, 2010 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents on Tuesday voted 125-75 in favor of a 2010-2011 elementary school spending plan that was slightly leaner than the version defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The approved, $1,330,817 spending plan was $6,158 less than the budget voters rejected by a 179-172 tally last March. The savings were derived from reduced health care premiums ($2,158) and reduced professional development expenses ($4,000).

Mount Abe reins in staff salaries

Posted on May 6, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union School Board on Tuesday night rejected the non-union support staff’s requests for across-the-board pay raises, instead striking a compromise that will largely spare the jobs of employees earning the smallest salaries while cutting raises entirely for more expensive senior staff.

Mediator to help heal ACSU office discord

Posted on May 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) board on Wednesday agreed to hire a mediator to help resolve some perceived problems with the working environment in the school district’s central office.

That action — taken following a lengthy executive session — comes after a consultant performed a “climate study” within the ACSU office, an undertaking the district board commissioned in February in response to reports of discord between some of the district’s employees.

Bridport school budget revote set

Posted on May 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents will return to the polls this Tuesday, May 4, to cast votes on a proposed 2010-2011 elementary school budget that is $6,158 leaner than the spending plan that was defeated by less than 10 votes on Town Meeting Day.

Voters rejected the original spending plan of $1,336,975 by a 179-172 tally. It proved to be one of the few school budget defeats in the state but was the second year in a row that Bridport residents had rejected their elementary spending plan.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School officials are looking at spending up to $200,000 this summer to replace one of the school’s boilers and build a new roof on one section of the East Street building.

Addison Northwest Supervisory Union business manager Kathy Cannon said VUES already has $125,000 set aside in a capital fund line item, including $15,000 in its recently approved budget, to help pay for the work.

Mt. Abe support staff, board clash over contract

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s non-union support staff and members of the high school board clashed on Tuesday night over a tender subject: salary and benefit negotiations.

The conversation came after the Mount Abe board, in a rare move, decided to suspend the rules at its board meeting on Tuesday evening to openly discuss a topic normally left behind closed doors.

So far, the school board is pushing for no increase in salaries for the non-union staff, and has also indicated an interest in raising health insurance co-pays from 4 to 10 percent.

Mount Abe eyes food plan

Posted on April 22, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board on Tuesday decided to solicit bids from outside food service vendors as the board continues to weigh its choices for overhauling the school’s cafeteria system.

Board chair Lanny Smith said that sending the project out to bid doesn’t mean the board will necessarily choose an outside company to run the school’s food service program, but simply leaves that option open for next year.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s language programs, already prominent nationally and globally, will soon reach a new frontier: cyberspace.

After 14 months of planning and negotiation, the college last Wednesday announced its decision to team up with K12 Inc., a Virginia-based online education company, to develop virtual language courses for primary and secondary school students.
