ANwSU invites public to discuss unification on Tuesday

ADDISON — A Tuesday forum at Addison Central School will look at the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union unification process. It is sponsored by the ANwSU committee that is spearheading what is expected to become the third formal effort since 2005 to unify union governance under one board.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., committee members will to address unification issues, including those that led to Addison’s petitioned defeat last year of the one-board initiative. Addison overturned its approval of unification in May 2009 after all five ANwSU towns backed it overwhelmingly that March.

ANwSU rebooting unification effort

FERRISBURGH — With a new Vermont law in place promising four years of tax breaks and a one-time cash bonus for school districts that consolidate, an Addison Northwest Supervisory Union board committee has begun holding public meetings to once again test one-board governance waters.

Legislators are trying to encourage school consolidation across Vermont through Act 153 as a cost-saving measure.

Gardens blooming in local schools

ADDISON COUNTY — The Mount Abraham Union High School garden began its first year at about 600 square feet. Now, as it wraps up its second year, the garden has doubled in size.

Mount Abe is just one of many schools in the county that have been taking the first steps toward incorporating more local food and nutrition education into their curriculums, in some cases bringing academic studies a little closer to technical agricultural programs.

UD-3 board hears from staff, public on budget

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 board on Tuesday heard from more than a dozen teachers and community members who requested that any cuts to the 2011-2012 budget not affect direct educational services to students.

Some advised the board to target extra-curricular activities and administrative positions in the Middlebury district, while others suggested school directors put away the budget cutting knife altogether.

RNeSU talks teacher contracts

BRANDON — After more than a year, officials in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union are hopeful that negotiations may be nearing an end, although the issues of salary and benefits remain on the table.

“We’re optimistic that we’ll have a resolution here in the next couple of months,” said RNeSU Superintendent John Castle.

OV students mix hands-on, classroom learning

BRANDON — Last Thursday, Vermont education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca sat in a camp chair on the floor of a canvas tent behind Otter Valley Union High School, listening with rapt attention to a debate about dams and hydro power.

The four students at the front of the tent, as well as the five others watching, attend the Moosalamoo Center for the first part of every school day as part of an experiential environmental education program run through the Brandon high school.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) teachers returned to work last week without a new contract for the second year in a row, though negotiators remain optimistic an accord will be reached with the benefit of renewed talks.
