Septic system central to Addison's plans

Posted on April 23, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Work has begun to evaluate whether a parcel of land west of Addison Central School could be suitable to host a septic system that might someday serve a renovated Addison Town Hall, the Addison Volunteer Fire Department and the Addison Community Baptist Church.

According to April 7 Addison selectboard minutes, John Spencer, the head of Addison’s Town Hall Committee, told the board that early testing of the land’s septic capacity looks promising.

State official proposes uses for Ferrisburgh parcel

Posted on March 23, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Light industry with a retail component, especially a value-added agricultural venture, could be the best use for the 34.91-acre parcel the town of Ferrisburgh owns at the intersection at Routes 7 and 22A. That was the message that Department of Housing and Community Development Commissioner Noelle MacKay gave the Ferrisburgh selectboard at a meeting this past Wednesday.

Four developers vie for downtown Middlebury parcel

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Four Vermont companies, one with a decidedly local flavor, are in the running to develop 1.42 acres of prime real estate in downtown Middlebury.

At issue is a town-owned parcel of land located behind the Ilsley Public Library, off Bakery Lane. Middlebury officials have, for the past several years, sought to market the property for some kind of mixed-used development that would complement the existing business scene and draw more shoppers to the downtown area.

Opinion: Act 250 process protected Ferrisburgh from sprawl

Posted on December 19, 2014 |
By Nick Patch

I applaud the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources and their recent ruling on the proposed Denecker development at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A in Ferrisburgh. Their ruling that this development would encourage sprawl development in the Route 7 corridor is spot on. The Route 7 corridor in Ferrisburgh is under huge development pressure and I am pleased that the ANR and the Addison County Regional Planning commission recognize that.

Denecker ends land deal, citing Act 250

Posted on November 20, 2014 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Pointing to the cost of and uncertain result for his ongoing Act 250 application, Denecker Chevrolet owner Tom Denecker recently told the town of Ferrisburgh he was giving up on his $350,000 purchase of town-owned land at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

In a Nov. 6 letter to the town, Denecker said his decision was a result of his inability to satisfy the “conditions to close” contingency in his purchase-and-sale agreement with Ferrisburgh.

Editorial: Powehouse decision should add polish to Riverfront Park

Posted on September 29, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In the summer of 1997, Florida architect Alfred Browning Parker, who had a second home in Lincoln, proposed a futurist design for a restaurant that would sit atop of the old mill powerhouse at the edge of the Middlebury Falls on Otter Creek. A front-page sketch of Parker’s vision (published on June 27, 1997) resembled a three-story space needle-like structure with magnificent views of the falls and river.

Middlebury seems poised to enter an exciting decade of economic development, start-ups and expansion.
