Final 2012 deer hunt numbers show respectable result

ADDISON COUNTY — Between October’s bow season and December’s combined bow and muzzleloader season, Addison County weigh stations handled 346 deer — 183 killed by arrows and 163 shot with muzzleloader rifles.

The muzzleloader total is an estimate because game wardens conducting an investigation took a book with several names of successful hunters from Starksboro’s Jerusalem Country Store; the overall county number is therefore also an estimate, but is certainly accurate within a few deer.

ADDISON COUNTY — Despite uncooperative weather and inconsistent reports about the presence of deer, the number of bucks taken to Addison County’s weigh stations during the just-concluded 16-day rifle season ended up being the second-highest since 2003.

That year marked the last season before the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife adopted new rules banning rifle hunters from shooting at bucks with fewer than three antler points.

MIDDLEBURY — On the first day of the recent Youth Hunting Weekend, 11-year-old Winston Forbes and his father were in the tree stand behind their Middlebury house.

“We sat there all day,” Winston said. “It was getting late.”

Finally, around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 3, their patience paid off.

“It came walking out,” Winston recounted. “I shot it twice and then we gutted it out. The next day, we reported it.”

ADDISON COUNTY — Despite unseasonably warm and thus uncooperative weather, the local rifle deer season got off to a solid start this past Saturday and Sunday with 148 deer reported to seven Addison County weigh stations.

That total represents a 22 percent increase over the 122 deer taken during the opening weekend of the disappointing 2011 rifle season, and it comes on the heels of the most productive Youth Hunting Weekend in at least eight years (see related story).

ADDISON COUNTY — Sunday’s end of the muzzleloader and bow deer seasons brought no more good news for local hunters than the end of November’s rifle season. The numbers of deer weighed at local reporting stations this month declined dramatically from recent years.

If anything, the drop for the combined results for October’s bow season and December’s muzzleloader and bow season was even steeper.

ADDISON COUNTY — After a banner Addison County rifle deer season in 2010, the number of bucks killed during this November’s 16-day rifle season and weighed at local reporting stations plummeted.

In all, 329 bucks killed between Nov. 12 and 27 were weighed at the nine county reporting stations that shared results with the Independent, a drop of 99 from the 2010 count from the same stations. 2010 was the best season locally since the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife banned shooting antlerless bucks (known as “spikehorns”) in 2005.
