Eric Davis: California leads way vs. Trumpism

Posted on June 14, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

The Framers of the Constitution tried to design a political system that would provide multiple opportunities to constrain the inappropriate use of power. The new government would include separate legislative, executive and judicial branches that would share powers and check each other. The states would also act as a constraint on governmental aggrandizement at the national level.

Eric Davis: On bending the arc towards justice

Posted on May 31, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric ONLINE.jpg

There is a long history in America of religious voices speaking out for societal improvement and reform within the context of the Judeo-Christian faith tradition.

In the years before the Civil War, Theodore Parker, a Unitarian minister in Boston, often preached to congregations of more than 2,000 people. They came to hear him oppose the Fugitive Slave Act and advocate for abolition. Parker also wrote, and preached, in favor of temperance, women’s rights, penal reform and society’s responsibility to improve the condition of the poor.

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

Sen. Claire Ayer’s decision not to run for another term in the Vermont Legislature has produced a rare occurrence in the Addison Senate district, consisting of all the Addison County towns, plus Huntington and Buel’s Gore in Chittenden County.

For the first time in many years, there will be an open Senate seat in the Addison District, that is known to be open well before the deadline for candidates to file petitions to be on the ballot. This year, that deadline is Thursday, May 31.

Letter to the editor: Massage therapists upset by unethical practitioner

Posted on April 23, 2018 |
By Addison County massage therapists

We have a thriving community of massage therapists in Addison County. We care about each other and want the best for our clients.

On April 16, we learned that a practitioner in Middlebury was charged with unethical behavior and has been shut down. Collectively, we feel pain and outrage on behalf of the people negatively impacted by his actions. When one therapist behaves unprofessionally, it not only harms people directly, it can dissuade others from utilizing massage as a pathway to healing and wellness.

Eric Davis: Might Scott follow Jeffords' path out of GOP?

Posted on April 5, 2018 |

Davis, Eric ONLINE.jpg

The state of Republican politics in Vermont is illustrated by a series of tweets sent last Saturday.

Sen. Patrick Leahy started the day by tweeting that he and his wife “spent my birthday at the American Cemetery at Normandy. Like all who come here, we’re so moved by the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy. We’ve been to these gravesites many times, and as I laid a wreath here today I gave my thanks again.”

Letter to the editor: Latest Mt. Abe renovation plan still unaffordable

Posted on March 1, 2018 |
By Geoff Davis

The March 6 vote on the revised $29.5 million Mount Abraham Union High School renovation bond brings to mind the quote often attributed to Albert Einstein, who may or may not have said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

And indeed, here we go again with yet another round of the same Mt. Abe remodeling madness and another largely identical bond issue just as objectionable as those before and for the same familiar reasons.
