One year later: Cross Street Bridge drawing good reviews

MIDDLEBURY — It was during the fall of 2010 that the $16 million Cross Street Bridge project was unveiled in downtown Middlebury with high hopes that it would clear Main Street traffic jams and provide a vital, second crossing of the Otter Creek as an insurance policy for emergency vehicles.

A year later, those hopes seem to be fulfilled: Early supporters and detractors alike are touting the project as an aesthetic and functional asset to the community.

End in site for bridge work

MIDDLEBURY — The $16 million Cross Street Bridge project continues to chug toward completion in downtown Middlebury, with the new roundabout intersection taking shape on Main Street and the new span’s superstructure now in place and ready for railings and lights.

Project directors are so optimistic of an on-schedule finish that they are already looking ahead to a grand unveiling celebration on Oct. 30 that will feature, among other things, a fireworks display, entertainment and a “first vehicle over the bridge” ceremony.

Zoning change pitched near new Middlebury bridge

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is considering an interim zoning change that would open the door to more business development near the east end of the soon-to-be completed Cross Street Bridge.

The board is tentatively set to hold a public hearing on Sept. 28 to receive feedback on the plan, which calls for zoning for properties fronting Cross and South Pleasant streets to be changed from “office-apartment” to “village-residential-commercial.”

Traffic taking a new turn in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury drivers last week got their first-ever opportunity to travel behind the town’s municipal building, as Academy Street officially opened to traffic in the first of what will be several changes in downtown traffic patterns this summer.

Academy Street is the new, one-way road linking College Street to Main Street. It is but one part of the $16 million Cross Street Bridge project scheduled for completion by the end of this October.

'Big Dig,' Midd-style: Bridge-related road work starts April 5

MIDDLEBURY — Construction on the Cross Street Bridge project will begin to spill into the center of downtown Middlebury beginning on Monday, April 5, when road and utilities work will kick into overdrive and create some slower going for traffic in some locations through the early fall.

Work on the $16 million project has, until now, been largely confined to sections of Cross Street and Bakery Lane near the Otter Creek, where the enormous span is taking shape.

Cross Street Bridge hits major milestone

MIDDLEBURY — Workers will spend the rest of this month and next completing the basic framework of the new Cross Street Bridge, then shut down major operations until early April with the goal of having the span ready for traffic by next Thanksgiving.

It has been an eventful fall for the project, culminating in the recent trucking, through downtown Middlebury, of a series of massive concrete beams that have now been swung into place between piers on each side of the Otter Creek.
