Black and white classmates tell real-life story of desegregation

MIDDLEBURY — Fifty-one years ago, Rose Strayhorn Bell, sisters Donnie Copeland Meadows and Fernanda Copeland, and Jim Grimsley showed up for the first day of sixth grade at Alex H. White Elementary in Pollocksville, N.C.

That morning Strayhorn Bell and the Copeland sisters broke the color barrier at what had been an all-white school.

Grimsley had never attended school with African American children.

College to host 'Sister-to-Sister' summit

MIDDLEBURY — “Sister-to-Sister” is hosting its thirteenth summit for middle school girls on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Middlebury College’s Kirk Alumni Center. “Sister-to-Sister” brings together middle school girls from Bristol, Middlebury and Vergennes with female Middlebury College students.

NPR's 'All Things Considered' host Robert Siegel to talk in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Robert Siegel, co-host of National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” daily news program, will reflect on his career in the news and the journalistic changes he has seen along the way in a talk at Middlebury College on November 1 at 7 p.m.

Siegel is senior host of NPR’s award-winning evening news magazine. With 40 years of experience working in radio news, Siegel hosts the country’s most-listened-to, afternoon-drive-time news radio program and reports on stories and happenings all over the globe.

MIDDLEBURY— Audience members expecting a bipartisan discussion on how best to build the American economy instead got an inspiring civics lesson.

Former New Hampshire governor and White House Chief of Staff John Sununu, a Republican, and former Congressman Barney Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts, came together Wednesday evening at Middlebury College to discuss “Finding Common Ground for Economic Opportunity in the Trump Era.”

Middlebury Biology department to host talk on "The Microbial Worlds Inside Us"

MIDDLEBURY — “The microbial worlds inside us” is the title of a talk being presented on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m.,  in Room 216 of Middlebury College’s Bicentennial Hall. 

Dr. Libusha Kelley of the Department of Systems & Computational Biology and Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine will explore how the microbes that live in our body influence human health.

Tree expert will guide visitors through foliage walk at college this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — Celebrate “Fabulous Fall Foliage” with a walk along the Trail Around Middlebury, sponsored by the Middlebury Area Land Trust. This hour-and-a half walk will be led by tree expert Tim Parsons, Middlebury College’s Landscape Horticulturist.

For Parsons, who is also a Vermont Certified Horticulturist and certified by the International Society of Aboriculture, fall foliage speaks to the tree’s life cycle.

Quidditch festival returns to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — This Saturday, Oct. 7, Middlebury College welcomes back a magical tradition, the Middlebury Classic Quidditch Tournament.

More than a dozen teams from around New England, including residential commons’ teams from Middlebury College, will battle for glory. Potion demonstrations, food trucks, acrobatics and visiting bands will turn the tournament into a spectacular, family-friendly festival.

The tournament will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. behind Battell Hall off of Route 125/College Street.

Baker & Tarpage Dance Project comes to Middlebury this weekend

The transnational performance group Baker & Tarpaga Dance Project (BTDP) — based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Philadelphia, Penn. — will draw from Africanist and postmodernist aesthetics to present “Declassified Memory Fragment” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, 8 p.m., at the Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury. This dance theatre work with live music is inspired by memory, history, and images of the political and cultural realities currently affecting the continent of Africa.
