MIDDLEBURY — Last Thursday, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) met with Lara Getz, one of 22 students evacuated earlier that week from Middlebury College’s study abroad program in Alexandria, Egypt.

Getz, a student at Tulane University, visited the senator in Washington, D.C., to thank him for his help in getting the students transportation out of the country in the face of an escalating public uprising against President Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule in the country.

MIDDLEBURY — A poem about an old Vermont farmhouse and a sustainability-inspired haiku — this is what Middlebury College students have envisioned for an upcoming collaborative project that will get the students and community members working together.

While architecture and physics students muse over the best way to create a solid envelope out of plywood and insulation in an attempt to bring home the gold at the Solar Decathlon competition next fall, two students are thinking more outside the box.

MIDDLEBURY — Though Middlebury College’s month-long J-Term has a reputation for being a rather laid-back time of year, the students heading up the college’s Solar Decathlon team have been even busier than usual this January.

Just last week, several students made the trip down to Orlando, Fla., for a Solar Decathlon conference and to attend the International Builders’ Show. And on Tuesday, the team gathered to host a fund-raising event at the Middlebury night spot 51 Main.

Students get crash course in business

By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — For 16 Middlebury College students, the average weekday this January includes studying neuroscience, selling books, learning to haggle, doing market research for a local dairy farm and meeting an ex-CIA spy.

Their MiddCORE course isn’t targeted for those students who are hoping to get out on the ski slopes often during the one-class J-term semester. Instead, they spend at least eight hours each weekday learning about business and entrepreneurship with guest speakers and competitive challenges.

MIDDLEBURY — Those working in Middlebury College’s sustainability office are feeling a bit more “chipper” this week.
