Former VUHS standout Devin Hayes to assist Panther nine

MIDDLEBURY — Former Vergennes Union High School and Castleton University baseball standout Devin Hayes has joined the Middlebury College baseball program as an assistant coach.

A 2017 Castleton graduate and four-year starting pitcher for the Spartans, Hayes helped Castleton win four straight North Atlantic Conference titles. He compiled a career record of 19-4, a 2.66 earned run average and struck out 183 batters in 203.1 innings for the Spartans.

Panther field hockey wins twice

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College field hockey team won two recent games to improve to 9-0, 5-0 in NESCAC play. The defending NCAA Division III champions have won 25 straight games.

The Panthers remain No. 1 in the NCAA rankings, but will face a challenge at home this weekend: No. 3 Tufts, which is 8-0 overall and at 5-0 in league play the only other unbeaten team in NESCAC, will visit Middlebury at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

On this past Saturday the Panthers scored four times in the second half in a 4-1 win at NESCAC rival Colby (4-4, 1-4 NESCAC).

Dave Donahue to step down from Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY — A well-known Middlebury College administrator who has in many situations acted as a liaison between the college and the local community will be leaving the institution at the end of October after 21 years.

Dave Donahue, Chief of Staff and Director of Community Relations in the office of college President Laurie Patton, announced on Sept. 20 that he has accepted a position as senior vice president and chief of staff at Ultimate Medical Academy, a 15,000-student, 2,000-employee nationwide educational nonprofit based in Tampa, Fla.

Panther eleven rallies past Bowdoin

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on Saturday to erase a 24-23 deficit and pull out a 37-24 victory over visiting Bowdoin (0-2). The Panthers evened their record heading into a game this Saturday at Colby.

Middlebury took the lead 22 seconds into the fourth quarter when reserve quarterback Will Jernigan capped a six-play, 90-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run. A 21-yard carry by Drew Jacobs and a 48-yard scamper by Peter Scibilia set up a score that made it 29-24.

Middlebury field hockey team wins two, remains undefeated

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team remained undefeated by topping two top-10 opponents this past weekend, both on the Panthers’ home turf.

The 7-0 Panthers are the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III and will visit Colby on Saturday.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Panthers topped No. 5 Babson, 2-1, dropping the Beavers to 7-2. Babson struck first on an Ashley Tango goal 8:39 into the game, an 8-yard bullet inside the left post after she worked into open space in the Panther circle.

Middlebury women's soccer still unbeaten

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team won two NESCAC games this past weekend to improve to 7-0, 4-0 in league play, the team’s best start since 2009. The Panthers entered this week ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III and will visit Colby on Saturday.

On this past Saturday the Panthers rolled past visiting Bowdoin, 3-1, dropping the Polar Bears to 2-3-1, 1-3 NESCAC.

Men's soccer settles for split

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team split a pair of NESCAC games this past weekend, rallying to win in double overtime at Hamilton on Sunday, 2-1, after losing at home to Bowdoin on Saturday, 1-0.

The Panthers, 3-2-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, will visit Colby on Saturday.

At Hamilton on Sunday Davis Oudet’s first career goal lifted Middlebury to the double overtime 2-1 victory.

Hamilton (4-3, 2-2 NESCAC) took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when Jefri Schmidt scored on a set piece.

MIDDLEBURY — The foursome of Josh Newton, Dale White, Bob Cameron and Ric Wheeler prevailed in the Sept. 19 Wednesday Evening Men’s Scramble at Ralph Myhre Golf Course, edging out the second-place posse of Don Keeler, Kevin Newton, Dean George and Jeff Bitcon.

On Sept. 20 the Thursday Bill Davidson Men’s Golf winning quartet was the team of Joe Bartlett, Nick Causton, John Betz and Neil Mackey.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team remained undefeated with a pair of NESCAC wins this past weekend, a tight home contest and a big road victory, both over ranked opponents.

The 5-0 Panthers entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III. On this coming Saturday at noon they will host Bowdoin (4-0), which was ranked No. 10 entering this past weekend.

On this past Saturday host Middlebury took a 4-0 lead and held off then No. 19 Amherst, 5-4. The Mammoths dropped to 1-2.
