Divided city council opts for smaller toddler park

VERGENNES — A divided Vergennes City Council last week approved a scaled-down preschool playground on East Street. Council members voted, 4-3, against the full $42,000 park that was recommended by the city’s recreation committee but opposed by many East Street residents and some others in Vergennes.

Toddler park hinges on council decision

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Dec. 16 will vote on whether to support the city recreation committee’s recommendation for a toddler park between the city pool and East Street.

Aldermen have been pondering for months whether to spend $21,000 of non-taxpayer funds on the project: a playground on a roughly 0.3-acre parcel at a site that was chosen because it is close to most city homes and next to recreation facilities.

Work coming soon to Vergennes City Hall

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting last week reached a consensus on tweaks to the city hall’s floor plan and asked City Manager Mel Hawley to start getting estimates, with work to begin as soon as January.

The first focus, said aldermen and Hawley, will be to convert into a meeting room the largest of the three rooms left vacant by the police force’s recent move.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes city council on Tuesday began considering what to do with the roughly 800 square feet of city hall formerly occupied by the Vergennes Police Department. According to Mayor Bill Benton aldermen hope to have a plan in place by January.

City officials consider new site for toddler park

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their Sept. 9 meeting discussed a possible new location for a proposed Vergennes toddler playground — a site between Vergennes Union Elementary School and the hockey rink/basketball court that is part of the city’s recreation area off East Street.

It is not far from the site on East Street that neighbors and other residents had opposed by filing petitions and attending early council meetings, citing the cost as well as criticizing the site.

Vergennes officials eyeing 9-cent hike in tax rate

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen are leaning toward a adopting a city budget that will call for a 9-cent increase in the municipal tax rate, of which 7 cents will pay for the Vergennes police station.

The new rate aldermen discussed on Tuesday and at their June 10 budget workshop is 72.5 cents, up from the current 63.5-cent rate that pays solely for city services, not for schools.

City budget headed for surplus

VERGENNES — At a 30-minute May 13 city council meeting, Vergennes aldermen heard from City Manager Mel Hawley he believed there will be carryover from the current budget into the next fiscal year.

The next day, Hawley emphasized his numbers were only preliminary, calling them his personal “early voter exit poll,” but still said he was hopeful Vergennes could end its fiscal year on June 30 with $125,000 in the bank.

City council readies for loss of cell tower revenue

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 8 meeting heard from City Manager Mel Hawley that the city will lose one cell phone contract, from Nextel Partners, to hang broadcast equipment on the city’s former water tower behind city hall. The city now has four contracts that contribute about $100,100 a year to the Water Tower Fund that helps pay for downtown improvements.
