College hosts China Town Hall for the community

MIDDLEBURY — Since 1978, when Chinese Communist Party Chairman Deng Xiaoping instituted the market-friendly “Reform and Opening Up Policy,” more than 300 million Chinese have climbed out of poverty. Today, China touts the world’s second-largest economy and has become the world’s leading manufacturer in terms of output, knocking the U.S. from its 110-year reign on that podium.

Two local teens heading to China

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School rising juniors Nate Wulfman and Micah Lynch are packing their bags and preparing to jet to China next week for what for both will be a first ever trip to Asia.

Part of a six-student team that draws from high schools across the state, Wulfman and Lynch will explore southern China for 20 days as participants in Green Across the Pacific’s (GATP) Chinese-American Environmental Youth Leadership Program.

Clippings: Should U.S. education follow China?

Americans are up in arms because while Shanghai, China, achieved first place across the board on the 2010 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), U.S. high school students tested 31st out of 65 economic regions in mathematics, 23rd in science, and 17th in reading. President Obama referred to the issue as “our generation’s Sputnik moment” and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan labeled it “an absolute wake up call for America.”
