The Champlain Bridge opened to traffic on Monday, November 7, once again connecting Crown Point, N.Y. and West Addison, Vt. Throngs of people turned out to watch the inauguration of the new bridge, which was built in 21 months after the old bridge was deemed unsafe. Commuters and local business owners alike heralded the return of the bridge, which serves as a vital economic link between the two states.

WEST ADDISON — A legion of dignitaries and hundreds of residents from both sides of Lake Champlain marked the much-anticipated opening of the new Champlain Bridge on Monday afternoon.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and state Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, were among the Vermont delegates who helped cut the ribbon on the $76 million bridge that was two years in the making. The former Champlain Bridge, build in 1929, was abruptly closed on Oct. 16, 2009, after it was deemed to be unsafe for travel.

ADDISON — A bi-state celebration of the opening of the new Champlain Bridge originally scheduled for mid-October has been postponed until May because organizers could not get a guarantee from New York transportation officials that the new span will be completed on time.

An ad hoc Lake Champlain Bridge Community (LCBC) panel, made up of more than 50 volunteers from Vermont and New York, has been planning a two-day celebration to mark the unveiling of the $70 million Champlain Bridge that will link West Addison with Crown Point, N.Y.

ADDISON — Recent flooding and high water levels on Lake Champlain have put a crimp in the construction of the new bridge linking West Addison to Crown Point, New York, though transportation officials said they are still driving for an Oct. 9 opening for the $70 million span.

“We have had to contend with the flood conditions and they have had an impact on our progress,” said John Grady, construction engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).
