Camp Keewaydin adventurers plan to paddle 1,200 miles to James Bay in hand-built canoes

MIDDLEBURY — Imagine driving from Middlebury to Jacksonville, Fla. Now, replace your car engine with a paddle and muscle power, and imagine canoeing the same distance — about 1,200 miles.

This spring, 10 young men will leave Lake Dunmore in a fleet of wood-canvas canoes they built themselves, bound 1,200 miles north for James Bay, Canada. Instead of finishing in the sunbelt, though, they’ll chase spring ice on their paddle through Quebec and Ontario.

Breaking from tradition, I recently paddled somewhere other than Otter Creek. My sister, the illustrious raft guide, was visiting and we settled on the not-so-tame New Haven River.

The Great Otter Doors

Okay, so this is a little downstream of this week's section, but we'll feature it soon...

So, the Weekly Rider is "rolling on" into a broader blog dealing with The Great Outdoors more generally. You'll still get biking updates on occasion, but this week, it's paddling.  

I’ve been doing a lot of paddling on Otter Creek lately, and there’s nobody else out there. So, it’s time to go public:

There’s some phenomenal canoeing and kayaking to be had in our backyards.

You could literally paddle in the backyard a few weeks ago, but this is more figurative.
