FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents will look at a lower Ferrisburgh Central School budget for a revote that will be timed to coincide with the Vergennes Union High School budget revote. The VUHS board last week eyed April 14 as a vote date.

On this past Thursday, the Ferrisburgh Central School (FCS) board approved a new spending plan of about $3.581 million, $39,113 less than the $3.62 million plan defeated on Town Meeting Day, 302-267. The FCS budget revote date will be set once the VUHS budget revote is set — likely this week.

Opinion: VUHS cuts would hurt kids, school, property values

By Christopher Wyckoff

As a Vergennes Union High School faculty member, local taxpayer and parent, I find myself in a very awkward situation. As a faculty member I support my school and my community. I want to make it clear that my job is not in jeopardy from the proposed cuts. As a local taxpayer and parent, I feel an obligation to write this letter to inform the public on some of the details of the proposed budget and some of my thoughts on this process.

Substantial state spending cuts loom

WHITING — Town officials hoping for some sort of financial life preserver this year from the state for ailing municipal and/or school programs had better learn how to tread water.

That’s because local lawmakers on Monday served notice they are trying to erase a $112 million shortfall in the fiscal year 2016 state budget. And unlike past years, there is no federal stimulus money, nor better-than-anticipated tax revenues to close the gap.

Editorial: Voters' message on school budgets — Keep moving forward

Posted on March 4, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

School budgets around the state, for the most part, fared better this year than last when 34 budgets were defeated in town meeting balloting. Why the difference? Largely because the average school budget increase was held to just under 3 percent, compared to much higher increases in 2014.

But there is also the perception that the Legislature is responding to the changing landscape caused by the steep decline in the number of students in Vermont (it’s down 21,000 in the past two decades), the low teacher-pupil ratios and the consequent high per-pupil cost.
