Bristol tallies up cost of flood repairs

BRISTOL — When Tropical Storm Irene slammed Vermont  a year ago, Bristol wasn’t as badly marred as some Vermont towns. But large sections of several major roads were wiped out, construction projects were taken back to phase one and several old structures were destroyed.

One year later, Bristol Administrator Bill Bryant said the town’s infrastructure and finances are in good shape. He credited the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), among others, for aiding in the recovery.

Local kombucha company expanding in Bristol

BRISTOL — When husband-wife duo Jeff Weaber and Katina Martin moved back to Addison County in 2005, Martin — a naturopathic physician — founded Salisbury Natural Family Health the following year.

Weaber, with his years of brewing experience in Oregon, decided to combine his and his wife’s skillsets to create a beverage high in vitamins and probiotic yeast and bacteria: kombucha, a slightly fermented tea first produced in Asia. In the autumn of 2007, the kombucha company Aqua Vitea was born in the basement of Weaber and Martin’s Salisbury home.

Bristol commission supports conservation corridor

BRISTOL — The Bristol Planning Commission at its Tuesday meeting grilled Alex Wylie, agricultural director of the Vermont Land Trust (VLT), for more than an hour about the ins and outs of proposed conservation easements along the Route 116 corridor north of Bristol.

The goal of the proposed sale of development rights is to preserve the wildlife corridor, maintain the aesthetics of Bristol’s northern gateway and ensure responsible forestry and agricultural practices.

Bristol Police Chief to discuss drugs on July 31

On July 31, Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs will hold a public forum for concerned citizens to discuss drug and crime issues in Bristol. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. in the basement of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, located on the west side of the town green just off of West Street. This meeting comes on the heels of several armed robberies this year, and what many citizens are calling an uptick in drug activity.

The biggest crowd in Pocock Rocks history turned out for the third-annual music and street festival in Bristl on Saturday, June 18. Bands like The Grift and Waylon Speed cranked out thumping tunes, while various food, alocohol and craft vendors intermingled with a vibrant Addison County community, together basking in the bright June sun.

Longtime elementary educator to step down

BRISTOL — After 31 years of teaching kindergarten and first grade at Bristol Elementary School, Sharon Donahue, 62, will teacher her last class on Thursday.

Provided with what she considered a sub-par elementary education, Donahue knew from a young age that she wanted to inspire young children as an influential teacher.

Bristol town plan shaping up, but critics warn language is vague

BRISTOL — As the new Bristol town plan quickly takes form, the Bristol Planning Commission on Tuesday continued to grapple with the level of detail necessary to pass and implement an effective plan.

Commissioners and residents have debated for weeks how specific they need to make the language in the draft of a new town plan. Individuals on both sides of the long-running debate over whether gravel extraction should be permitted in certain town zones have called for more detailed language.
