BRISTOL — Bristol residents on Tuesday will cast ballots on a new Bristol Elementary School spending plan for next year that shaves a fraction of a percent off the proposal they defeated on Town Meeting Day. But despite asking for $2,700 less in spending, the new budget would restore some instructional positions targeted to be cut by reducing spending in other areas.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board has laid out a timeline and strategy to draft a new budget proposal that could gain voter approval.

Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters on Town Meeting Day rejected, by a tally of 1,241 to 1,088, a proposed $14.06 million spending plan to operate the school next year. That sum was slightly lower than the figure voters approved for the current year.

Hundreds seek ouster of ANeSU superintendent

LINCOLN — For 26 seconds, applause rocked the walls of Lincoln Community School’s tiny gymnasium Tuesday evening. The cause of the ovation was not, as one might suspect, a game-winning basket or conclusion of a musical performance.

Rather, a local resident asked her supervisory union board to fire the superintendent.

During visitors’ business of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union board meeting, Koran Cousino of Starksboro presented a petition signed by hundreds of voters who support the dismissal of ANeSU Superintendent David Adams.

VERGENNES — One race on the Vergennes Town Meeting Day ballot offers a rematch of a 2012 contest decided by a single vote: Former multi-term incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman is challenging incumbent Susan Ferland, the woman who unseated her three years ago, 329-328.

This time around, both are seeking a three-year term on the VUES board. A two-year term on the VUES board is also coming open, with Sue Rakowski running unopposed for that seat.

Job cuts eyed at Bristol Elementary School

BRISTOL — A proposed Bristol Elementary School budget that would increase spending by 2.76 percent in the next fiscal year is drawing criticism from some faculty and staff who are concerned that it would cut several staff positions and hurt students.

The $4.9 million spending plan, which the school board tentatively signed off on last week, would curb costs in several areas, including by eliminating one faculty position and five non-special education support staff positions.
