Last weekend at a girls’ basketball tournament, I found myself in a public restroom with my 12-year-old daughter and some other moms and pre-teens. I washed my hands and waved them under the paper towel dispenser to trigger the sensor.

Nothing.

Wave, wave.

Nothing.

Frantic jazz-hands wave.

Still nothing.

My daughter groaned.

“It’s not that kind, Mom,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Just pull.”

Around the Bend: Didn't win lottery, but still lucky

My Saturday morning went south the moment I found out I had not become a multimillionaire overnight.

Oh, I knew a single Mega Millions lottery ticket wouldn’t give me a real chance at Friday night’s record-setting $654 million jackpot.

But I didn’t have just one ticket.

Last week, 20 of my fellow Addison Independent employees and I each threw $2 into an office pool. While one ticket offered only a 1-in-75-million chance of winning, we had 42.

It was all we could do not to clean out our desks Friday afternoon.

Since moving into our old farmhouse five years ago, Mark and I knew we’d eventually like to make some improvements. With a combination of indecision, insufficient funds and outright hostile disagreement, however, we’ve never gotten around to any renovations. But this winter’s oddly pleasant weather has given us the opportunity.

It’s not easy being scatterbrained.

My mind is constantly running in different directions, and I forget things. Just keeping track of my car keys occupies a good portion of my brain each day, and the portion that’s left can’t handle the remaining workload. I forget not only what things I need to do, but also whether I have — or have not — already done them. You can’t imagine the trouble this gets me into.

Around the bend: Capping a delightfully dull year

Being lazy, I thought I’d wrap up 2011 by copying the Addison Independent and making a chronology of all the noteworthy events in my year.

But I got stuck early on, when I realized that in January I only had two items to report: I finally replaced the burned-out light bulb in the fridge and I broke the handle on my windshield scraper.

For me, 2011 was not a year of living dangerously.

Around the Bend: 'Touch' of technology doesn't help

Not long ago, I received a free hand-me-down iPod Touch. I was thrilled, not only because it had originally retailed for about $200 but also because I had never owned such a sleek, technologically advanced gadget. (Keep in mind I think remote car starters are magic; I thrill easily.)

But once I got over the simple elegance of the smooth flat screen, I honestly couldn’t think of a single reason to have it.

You’ve heard the expression “If you want something done, do it yourself.”

I use this a lot. Like a few weeks ago, when I stared up at the dome ceiling light over our kitchen table and announced my plans to replace it with a proper chandelier.

My husband, Mark, groaned. He wasn’t opposed to a fancier light, but lately he’d been working so much his focus was more on putting food on the table than on illuminating it.
