FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh dog rescuer Sheila McGregor is out of compliance with a town board of health order related to a rat infestation on the Sand Road property she rents, according to the Ferrisburgh selectboard.

But, said selectboard Chairman Rick Ebel, is it not clear what the next steps are for the town because McGregor has appealed the town Board of Health’s order to the Vermont Department of Health.

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has announced the 2018-2019 migratory bird hunting season dates and bag limits.

A statewide Vermont open hunting season for resident Canada geese will occur Sept. 1-25. The Outside Story: Orb webs and the artwork of spiders

Posted on July 9, 2018 |
By Rachel Marie Sargent

TOS_Spider_Web.jpg

When I was little and tagging along when my dad tended his vegetables, I would sometimes find large black and yellow garden spiders. They were beautiful, and I noticed they had a curious trait: they often added a bright white decorative zigzag to their webs. Couch-sitting, TV-watching duck is human imprinting gone wrong

Posted on July 5, 2018 |
By Nick Garber

WoodDuck2950.jpg

MONKTON — Picture this: an 11-year-old wood duck sits on the couch with a Vermont family, watching TV and eating their popcorn.

This is no hallucination, but a real example of a worrying behavioral pattern: wild animal imprinting on humans.

Imprinting refers to the crucial process in which a young animal learns what species it is. For precocial birds like ducks and geese, imprinting is based on sight, and takes place almost immediately.
