Free summer lunch available for area kids

BRISTOL/VERGENNES — Local schools will be out for the summer this week, but in community centers and summer camp programs across the northern half of Addison County, the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Food Co-op will be hard at work providing free, healthy lunches to children for the third year running.

ANeSU annual Fine Art Fair showcases student work, art programs

BRISTOL — Last week, the Mount Abraham Union High School gymnasium was transformed. The bleachers were pushed back and colorful displays of mounted paintings and drawings, shiny metalwork and intricate sculptures filled the space.

Bristol Elementary principal accepts district job

BRISTOL — A reshuffling of positions is under way in Bristol schools, as Bristol Elementary School Principal Catrina DiNapoli takes a one-year interim position with the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union. The school district is looking to interview candidates to fill the BES principal position for a year.

 

DiNapoli will take on the role of curriculum and professional development director for the 2013-2014 academic year, filling in for Nancy Cornell, who is taking a one-year leave of absence for personal reasons.

ANeSU board commissions facilities study for Mount Abe

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union has commissioned a facility and educational needs study for Mount Abraham Union High School.

“There are no current issues with the structure,” said Arden Harwood, the facilities director at Mount Abe. “But for the first time, probably ever, we’re trying to be more proactive with the repair cycle.”

Citizen seeking to open ANeSU teacher negotiations

BRISTOL — A Starksboro man would like Bristol-area school boards to be a little more transparent when negotiating teacher contracts, and he has filed a lawsuit that could be precedent-setting.

John Jefferies said in a complaint filed in court last week that the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union and Mount Abraham Union High School districts and their boards and committees have gone into executive session without cause during face-to-face and mediated meetings with representatives of the teachers’ union during contract negotiations.

Aspiring young artists exhibit their talents in Bristol

BRISTOL — March is Youth Arts Month across the nation, and for the last nine years, Art on Main in downtown Bristol has marked the occasion with an Emerging Artists Exhibit that gives young Five Town Area artists an opportunity to shine in a professional gallery setting.

Students with exceptional talent and dedication to the arts from Mount Abraham Union High School are selected by Mount Abe art teachers for the annual gallery exhibition. Their art is professionally framed and displayed at Art on Main for the month of March.

BRISTOL — Balancing acts, tumbles across the floor, jumping, hopping and juggling tricks galore — a performance of Cirque du Soleil?

No, the first performance of “Cirque du Bristol,” the Bristol Elementary School’s school-wide holiday performance, which was performed by 300 Bristol students Monday at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Bristol 5/6-grade students demonstrate conscience with no-waste Thanksgiving

BRISTOL — Thanksgiving lunch at Bristol Elementary School this year was the traditional meal it is every year: turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, corn, rolls, pickles, cranberry sauce and good friends.

However, in one big way, the meal was quite different. The students in Ms. Murnane’s fifth- and sixth-grade class had a dream to make this annual event completely garbage free. With the help of Kristen Andrews, education coordinator for the ANESU Food Service Cooperative, and the BES kitchen staff, the students very nearly achieved that goal.

New ANeSU superintendent grabs the reins

BRISTOL — At the beginning of this month, new Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams took hold of the ANeSU helm, replacing Evelyn Howard who held the position for 12 years.

Adams comes to ANeSU with more than 30 years of teaching and administrative experience. His wife, Judith Adams, is the assistant superintendent at Bennington Rutland Supervisory Union. The avid outdoorsman is currently renting a home in Huntington, and he has two daughters and three grandchildren.

ANeSU teachers win pay raises in new contract

ADDISON COUNTY — Head negotiators for Addison Northeast Supervisory Union teacher contract talks said they have agreed to a four-year contract that features pay increases.

After ANeSU teachers worked for almost two years without a collective bargaining agreement, the ANeSU board and teachers’ union negotiators struck a deal last Monday, June 11.
