NEW HAVEN — Over a year of negotiations culminated at Tuesday night’s selectboard meeting, when the New Haven selectboard approved and then signed an agreement with developers of the Vermont Green Line to site a 400 megawatt power line converter station in New Haven.

The Vermont Green Line will bring wind and hydro power from upstate New York into the New England grid at the VELCO substation in New Haven. The deal is expected to funnel millions of dollars into town coffers in exchange for allowing construction of the huge converter station.

FERRISBURGH — As higher profile and higher stakes talks have gone on between New Haven and the companies proposing a major new underground power line from New York state to New Haven, quieter negotiations have also been held in Ferrisburgh, another critical link in the planned 60-mile, $600 million project.

Massachusetts companies Anbaric Transmission and National Grid, the developers of the 400-megawatt Vermont Green Line, hope to bring hydro and wind power from upstate New York by cable under Lake Champlain and into the New England power grid via New Haven.

NEW HAVEN — At last week’s town meeting, New Haven residents made it very clear to their elected officials that they want a say in whether a high-voltage power line and converter station is built in town.

On the floor of the Feb. 29 meeting, New Haven residents passed two straw polls asking the town to gather more information about Anbaric Transmission’s Vermont Green Line proposal and then to hold a town-wide Australian ballot vote on whether to accept Anbaric’s offer.

NEW HAVEN — A recent vote on the proposal to build a large converter station to accommodate a 400-megawatt power line that would bring renewable energy through New Haven revealed a selectboard divided in its assessments of the project’s pros and cons.

The Vermont Green Line project would bring New Haven roughly $1 million annually and a number of other enticements, according to developers’ pitch to the town last December.

WALTHAM — The Waltham selectboard came away from a Dec. 7 meeting with representatives of the companies proposing the Vermont Green Line saying it would recommend the town support the planned $600 million, 400-megawatt underground power line that would run from Beekmantown, N.Y., to New Haven.
