ADDISON COUNTY — After two years of rock bottom prices, business is looking up for many Vermont dairy farmers.

Cornwall dairy farmer John Roberts, who with his wife Lisa milk 200 cows at Butterwick Farm, said that this week his milk pulled in $23.19 per hundredweight (cwt) — more than double what it was fetching just two years ago, in 2009.

“It’s a big step forward,” he said.

BRISTOL — Students at Mount Abraham Union High School rolled up their sleeves, picked up their hoes, and got their hands dirty in the school garden last week. NEW HAVEN — The crowd that packed the space at the Lincoln Peak Vineyard building in New Haven last Thursday night, sipping on wine and nibbling local appetizers, could have been attending a party.

But the event that drew nearly 100 people, including a number of prominent figures in county farming and agriculture, was the annual meeting of the Addison County Relocalization Network, known locally as ACORN.

MIDDLEBURY — Seven years ago, New York freelance writer Kristin Kimball would never have imagined herself running a horse-powered subsistence farming operation and Community Supported Agriculture operation in northern New York state.

But at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater last week, Kimball launched the paperback version of her book “The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food and Love,” which catalogs her transition from a world-traveling freelance writer to the co-owner of Essex Farm, just across Lake Champlain in Essex, N.Y.

NEW HAVEN — The chorus of spring peepers’ early season song marks the end of maple sugaring season. For many sugarmakers across the lower elevations of Addison County’s Champlain Valley, last weekend likely marked this sugar season’s final sap run.

“I’m boiling in the frog run,” bellowed George Crane over the roar of his wood-fire evaporator.

ADDISON COUNTY — What’s the big difference between this year’s maple sugar season and last year’s?

The snow.

A burden to some and a blessing to others, local sugarmakers say this winter’s massive snowfall is setting the tone for the year’s sugar season.

“It’s just been a struggle,” said Bill Heffernan of Heffernan Family Sugarworks in Starksboro about tapping 9,500 trees beginning on Feb. 16. “It’s tough in three to four feet of snow.”
