MIDDLEBURY — Actor Jeremy Holm was driving from a gig in Stowe to his Vergennes home last September when his radio popped with some news he couldn’t ignore.

It was a story about the police chief in East Liverpool, Ohio, who had posted a photo on Facebook depicting two adult heroin addicts passed out in front seats of their vehicle, with their 4-year-old boy asleep in the backseat.

“The chief put that picture up because he needed help,” Holm recalled. “He said, ‘You can’t arrest yourself out of this problem.’”

ADDISON COUNTY — Last week seemed to be the perfect time for young male drivers to crash their cars and hoof it away from the scene before the police arrive; at least that’s what can be gleaned from the recent Vermont State Police reports.

First, on Jan. 10 troopers were notified by an Addison County sheriff’s deputy of a vehicle travelling east on Leicester Whiting Road at an extremely high rate of speed. When the deputy had seen two vehicles racing on Route 30 in Whiting, he activated his emergency blue lights, but only one vehicle pulled over.

MIDDLEBURY — Freddie and Gladis, Mexican citizens, have worked on Vermont dairy farms since 2010. Last month the couple brought their two-month-old daughter, Charlene, from Stowe, where they live, to Middlebury for the annual visit by officials from the Mexican Consulate of Boston.

They came to get a Mexican birth certificate for the pink-swathed baby, a new service offered by the Mexican diplomats.

The wish for birth certificates was part of a dominant theme at this year’s annual visit from the Mexican Consulate — uncertainty.

Santa0300.jpg

Dear boys and girls (adults too),

I recently visited your town during its early Christmas celebration on Dec. 3 and had the privilege of meeting almost 100 children at the Middlebury Community House. It’s a terrific event I do every year, and I want to offer a big thanks to the Better Middlebury Partnership and the hardworking people who make “A very Merry Middlebury” possible. What a wonderful time I had hearing the hopes, dreams and wishes of the children who sat on my lap!
