Editorial: State demographics signal 'scary' times for rural areas

Posted on July 14, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Here are two seemingly contradictory numbers that represent the nut of Vermont’s economic challenge: In the past four years, Vermont’s workforce has shrunk by 8,700 workers, while the total employed has gone up slightly from 339,700 in 2014 from 338,400 in 2013.”

Now, wait a minute, you might think. How can the workforce be shrinking by that much and we have more total employment over the past two years? And if total employment is up, and unemployment is statistically at rock bottom (3.3 percent), what’s the big worry?

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s no secret that Vermont’s population, on average, is aging, and Addison County is being affected almost as much as any of the rural counties.

In the past 10 years, three new senior living facilities opened in Addison County (Armory Lane Senior Housing in Vergennes and Eastview and the Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury), indicating an increase in the county’s elderly population. During the same period, high school enrollment dropped to its lowest levels since the early 1990s.

Opinion: Ignoring town and regional plans ignores public process

Posted on July 2, 2014 |
By Ross Conrad

The June 26 edition of the Addison Independent featured a story on proposed changes to the Middlebury Town Plan by the Middlebury Planning Commission. The report claimed that the changes were necessary to “clarify language that might have been ambiguous.” Not that they were ambiguous, but might be.

Middlebury area ambulance service seeks funding from towns

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Regional EMS has decided to resurrect its practice of asking for Town Meeting Day contributions from the 10 towns it serves, money the organization will place in a fund for future capital needs.

Middlebury Regional EMS — once known as the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association — began requesting Town Meeting Day contributions in 1998. The organization used those funds — an average of $25,319 per year — to help solidify its operating budget.

River Watch group has some concerns with local waters

Riverwatch sampling.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — At its volunteer training session in March, Addison County River Watch Collaborative had a standing-room-only crowd of eager water samplers, and, since then, one morning per month those volunteers from many Addison County communities have been venturing out to collect bottles of water from area streams. This year the river monitoring collaborative established several new sampling sites on the upper Middlebury River in Ripton, and also is still monitoring five other rivers in the county, an ongoing effort designed to tease out trends in water quality.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury resident Jesse Euber started high school in Fair Haven and transferred to Middlebury Union High School. It proved to be a difficult period for her.

“I was having a really hard time with the transition and I wasn’t getting pushed to go to school,” Euber, 21, recalled in an interview last week.

She dropped out of high school when she was 16 and moved in with her son’s father. Without a high school diploma, Euber’s job prospects were limited, and her transition into adulthood was daunting.
