Two local realtors receive awards

BURLINGTON — Two Addison County Realtors were honored this month at Shelburne Museum’s Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education for their 2018 sales and service achievements. Chris von Trapp and Michael Johnston of Coldwell Banker Hickok & Boardman Realty were each recognized.

Waltham Town Meeting results 2019

WALTHAM — Waltham residents at Waltham Town Hall on Monday evening approved all proposed town spending measures and chose town officers, all from the floor of town meeting.

They approved by voice vote a town spending plan for the 2019-2020 fiscal year of $226,276. Overall, that spending is down by about $5,500 from the current level.

That budget includes $94,626 for general operations and $131,650 for road maintenance.

Voters also backed charitable requests that totaled $3,909, up by $100 from 2018’s donations.

Waltham Town Meeting Preview 2019

WALTHAM — Financial matters will be the main concerns for Waltham residents when they gather for their annual meeting and cast votes in early March.

At 6 p.m. on Monday, March 4, at Waltham Town Hall residents will meet to choose town officers and weigh in on proposed town spending from the floor of town meeting.

The selectboard has put forth a town spending plan for the 2019-2020 fiscal year of $226,276.

That budget includes $94,626 for general operations and $131,650 for road maintenance.

Addison race tops Vergennes-area ballots

ADDISON — Barring a write-in campaign the only Town Meeting Day race for a major town office in the Vergennes area will come in Addison, according to petitions for offices filed by the deadline this past Monday.

In Addison multi-term incumbent Selectman Peter Briggs will face a challenge for a two-year seat from Alden Harwood.

Briggs, a farmer who has also mounted challenges for the Vermont House and Senate as a Republican, first won a spot on the Addison selectboard in 2015.

Waltham plan envisions city sewer service

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Council members made no comment this past Tuesday evening when City Manager Matt Chabot said he had met with the Waltham Planning Commission to discuss a zoning change in Waltham that would require city sewer service to meet its long-range goals.

Waltham eyes moves to aid housing, forest

WALTHAM — The Waltham Planning Commission is studying ways of amending town zoning to allow more affordable housing on Maple Street near Vergennes and to protect more forest and wildlife habitat, mostly around Buck Mountain.

Planners’ work comes on the heels of an August rewrite of town zoning that according to Planning Commission Chairman Phil Nowell dealt with mostly technical issues and brought the laws into compliance with many provisions of Waltham’s 2016 town plan.

Peter Quinn, respected coach and counselor, recalled fondly

WALTHAM — The Saturday death of highly respected Vergennes Union High School clinician and basketball coach Peter Quinn sent waves of shock and sadness through the students and athletes he served, his colleagues and fellow coaches, former hoop teammates and fellow pick-up game competitors, and all those who respected his dedication to his work, love of basketball and quick wit.

WALTHAM — Highly respected school-based clinician and Vergennes Union High School basketball coach Peter Quinn died unexpectedly on Saturday morning of natural causes, stunning the VUHS and Vergennes community he had served for two decades and saddening the many who knew him statewide for his dedication to the welfare of teens and his love of basketball.

A native of Concord, Mass., and a 1971 graduate of Middlebury College, Quinn started his career in social work at the former Weeks School in Vergennes.

Vergennes man killed in crash

WALTHAM — A 25-year-old Vergennes man was killed this past Friday night in a car crash off Green Street in Waltham.

Casey “CJ” Poquette, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at Porter Hospital shortly after the crash, which took place a little after 9 p.m.

Panton and Waltham residential taxpayers see modest decreases

PANTON/WALTHAM — Homeowners in both Panton and Waltham saw modest decreases in their property tax bills when they opened them recently compared to their 2017-2018 bills. Owners of commercial property and second homes in both towns saw essentially level taxes compared to a year ago.

Panton’s residential rates remain lower than those from two years ago, although non-residential rates have risen by about 5.5 cents. A drop in the town portion of the tax bill is offsetting higher school rates.
