Your dogs may not be able to resist chasing deer

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reminds dog owners that they must keep their dogs under control to prevent them from chasing deer or moose.

Vermont law prohibits letting your dog run deer or moose and provides that a State Game Warden or other law enforcement officers may shoot a dog that is running deer. In addition, a dog owner may be fined up to $200 for allowing his or her dog to run deer.

Vermont Tech names county students to dean's list

Vermont Tech in Randolph congratulates the following Addison County students for achieving dean's list honors for the fall semester of 2018. These students received a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Brandon:  Nathan Doty, Renewable Energy;  Chad Eddy, Electromechanical Engineering Technology; and Aedan Taylor, Computer Information Technology.

Bristol: Kendra Thompson, Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

Hemp growers and processors can now register online

MONTPELIER —  The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is now accepting applications for registration to grow and process industrial hemp for the 2019 registration year. The registration process is online. Hemp growers and processors have separate registration applications. The forms provide VAAFM with the opportunity to collect information about the hemp industry in Vermont, which supports VAAFM’s research as part its Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. The fee to register is $25.00.

Vermont State Police: Troopers: Drunk man drives 100 mph

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police alleged that a South Burlington man was drunk when he was caught driving 100 mph in Addison County last week.

At a little after 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, troopers stopped a red Chevy Cruz on Route 7 in New Haven after clocking it at 100 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. Police identified the driver as Michael Reyes, 28, of South Burlington.

Local lawmakers agree with Scott's 'affordability' agenda but want details on costs

MONTPELIER — Addison County lawmakers are largely on the same page with Gov. Phil’s Scott’s stated goals of making Vermont cleaner, more affordable and more populated during the next two years and beyond.

But they want more details from Scott on how he plans to achieve his ambitious objectives — without raising taxes on Vermonters.

Sen. Hardy steps into new role at Statehouse

MONTPELIER — While many Vermont state senators began last Wednesday in their cars, battling a snowstorm on the way from their districts, East Middlebury Democrat Ruth Hardy strapped snow spikes onto her shoes and walked to the Statehouse.

Hardy, Addison County’s newest state senator, stayed the night before her swearing-in at her newly rented room in Montpelier and reported early for her first day on the job.

UVM names fall dean's list

BURLINGTON — The University of Vermont has announced its dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester. A number of Addison County students were named to the list, which requires students to have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.

Addison County students on the list include:

Brandon — Grace Bart

Bridport — Joshua Girard and Haven Tate

Bristol — Matthew Gorton, Christopher Lampart and Riley Forbes

CCV childcare certification classes are going online

MONTPELIER — As Vermont continues to struggle with a shortage of high-quality childcare for working families, Community College of Vermont (CCV) is offering a new way for educators to get the training they need. Beginning in spring 2019, CCV will deliver an accelerated online version of its childcare certificate program.

Here is Gov. Phil Scott’s Second Inaugural Address, delivered Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier.

In this speech, the Berlin Republican focused a large section of his speech on the trends of a Vermont workforce that is contracting and a student population that is shrinking even faster. He points out that no population growth has led to fewer working-age Vermonters — 15,000 fewer since 2009, he said. And he specifically pointed to the loss of 5 percent of the workforce in Addison County.

Vermont State Police: Trooper makes New Year's Eve bust

ADDISON COUNTY — As 2018 was nearing its conclusion early last week, Vermont State Police stopped a car driven by a Ripton man and gave him a criminal citation to end the year.

On Dec. 31 at approximately 5:45 p.m. troopers from the New Haven barracks stopped 2017 Chevy Cruze on Route 7 in the New Haven. After identifying the driver as 27-year-old Kevin Jackson of Ripton, police determined that his privilege to operate a motor vehicle was civilly suspended in the state of Vermont.
