ICE boosts staff as tip line sees more action

The tipster called in to report his ex-girlfriend.

For years, the man had known the woman was in the country without proper documentation. But the relationship had recently ended, and he decided to alert federal immigration authorities that his ex had overstayed a visa, and now was living and working in the United States without documentation.

As the caller relayed details about his ex’s employment and address, a telephone operator took notes in an unremarkable brick office building a few hundred yards from a Bed, Bath & Beyond in Williston.

The Outside Story: Orb webs and the artwork of spiders

When I was little and tagging along when my dad tended his vegetables, I would sometimes find large black and yellow garden spiders. They were beautiful, and I noticed they had a curious trait: they often added a bright white decorative zigzag to their webs. I always wondered why, if a spider web is meant to catch insects unawares, these spiders would go to such effort to make their webs more visible?

To answer this question, I recently spoke with Dr. Todd Blackledge, who researches spider silk and the web decorations of garden spiders.

Vt. parks to supply camping gear and sites in free lottery

MONTPELIER — Vermont State Parks is excited to launch the new First Time Happy Campers Program at five parks during the months of July and August. Created in partnership with the Outdoor Gear Exchange, this program provides free camping for new campers, whose names will be chosen at random when they register at vtstateparks.com/happy-camper.html.

Officials: Don't swim in fishing access areas

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reminds the public not to swim at fishing access areas due to safety concerns. The primary use of the fishing access areas is for launching and retrieving motorboats.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department maintains 190 developed fishing access areas on lakes and rivers throughout the state. These areas have allowed uses determined by law, and swimming is not one of them.

The American Red Cross has steps you can take to help stay safe when the temperatures soar.

Variety of new state laws take effect this month

The state’s attention in recent weeks was focused on the budget negotiations between Gov. Phil Scott and the Legislature, which prompted a special session of the Legislature and warnings of a state government shutdown. Last week that situation ended when Scott said he’d let the Legislature’s third Budget Bill become law without his signature, which it did on July 1.

Coupons now available to buy local food

WATERBURY — Starting on July 2, about $143,000 in coupons will be available to help eligible Vermonters buy locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers’ markets. Coupons are issued on a first come, first served basis and may be used at any of the 52 markets enrolled in the program this summer.
