The Force

When I hear a giant,

Jack in the Beanstalk creaking,

I think tree immediately,

but puzzle when it persists,

without a trace of wind.

I enter the woods cautiously,

with an eye on the canopy?

and witness, after maybe

eighty years of growing?

a top-heavy poplar, easing

slowly as an archly fainting

maiden down?then, suddenly

as an accident to ground?

with an awesome final display

Vermont State Police: Elderly Shoreham driver unable to stop, hits vehicle

Bulbs: The promise of spring

Late fall is the perfect time to ready our gardens for the coming years, thus perpetuating the never-ending cycle of the seasons.

As soon as the above-ground portion of most perennials have died back to the ground, their roots will become dormant. Thus late fall is actually the least stressful time to divide and rearrange our garden plants.

Moreover, since the soil is still soft and dig-able, getting out those pesky roots of perennial weeds like dandelions and grasses is a relatively easy task.

Vermont Supreme Court visits Proctor High School

PROCTOR—On Wednesday, when the bailiff called, “All rise” and five Supreme Court Justices entered the courtroom, they were not entering a courtroom at all, but rather the stage of Proctor Jr/Sr High School’s gymnasium.

On the gym floor, more than 80 students from Proctor and Poultney High Schools stood to greet the Justices, who had come to give the students a taste of the inner workings of the highest court in the state.

Certification deadline for Current Use is Nov. 1

VERMONT — Landowners who have agricultural land and/or farm buildings enrolled in the Current Use program face an important deadline on Nov. 1. Landowners currently enrolled must certify that their agricultural land and farm buildings continue to meet the requirements for the Current Use program.

Landowners who are unsure whether or not they need to file the agriculture certificate, may look up their SPAN using the online search found here.

Ag agency: $1M in water-quality grants is available

MONTPELIER — Up to $1 million in grant money is available to help farmers improve water quality, the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets recently announced. The Capital Equipment Assistance Program, or CEAP, is available for new or innovative equipment that will aid in the reduction of surface runoff of agricultural wastes to state waters, improve water quality, reduce odors from manure application, separate phosphorus from manure, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce costs to farmers when they apply manure or implement a Nutrient Management Plan.

VUHS, Mt. Abe row at LCMM-sponsored meet

BURLINGTON — Rowing teams from Vergennes Union High School won three out of five races on Oct. 6 at the James Wakefield Rescue Row, a series of youth rowing races sponsored in Burlington harbor by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.

One-hundred-sixty-seven high- and middle-school rowers from schools from Vermont (including Mount Abraham as well as VUHS), Maine and Massachusetts competed in the Saturday event.

Youth deer-hunting reporting stations announced

MONTPELIER — With youth deer weekend just around the corner, young hunters are encouraged to take to the field to hone their skills and to also help Fish & Wildlife biologists by reporting their deer at one of 24 biological reporting stations around the state.

Youth deer hunting weekend helps ensure that young hunters get the quality training they need for lifelong participation, and it also provides biological information needed to manage the deer population.
