Federal food bill heads to President's desk

VERMONT — In an action that surprised many observers, the U.S. Senate on Sunday passed the Food Safety and Modernization Act.

The bill, which had appeared dead after it encountered a number of technical issues close to the end of this year’s congressional session, passed the Senate unanimously by voice vote late on Sunday. From there, the bill headed to the U.S. House, where it was approved on Tuesday and sent to the President’s desk.

As food safety bill flounders, Vt. farmers question benefits

VERMONT — On Nov. 30, in a rare showing of bipartisan agreement, 73 U.S. Senators voted to pass the Food Safety and Modernization Act. Since that date, however, the bill has lingered in a state of purgatory. While Senate Democrats on Friday continued to push for the legislation, the window of opportunity was closing quickly.

Plan seeks to preserve Vt.'s open landscape

MONTPELIER — At a summit in Montpelier this past Friday, members of the Vermont Council on Rural Development’s Working Landscape Partnership laid out a plan that they hope will preserve and bolster the state’s agricultural and forestry economy.

The more than 300 people gathered at the Future of Vermont’s Working Landscape summit included planners, legislators and governor-elect Peter Shumlin. Among the faces were many from Addison County who are interested in sustaining the area’s agricultural way of life and the culture surrounding it.

Dean Foods settlement to pay farmers

BURLINGTON — Some Vermont dairy farmers may soon see some financial relief following a proposed $30 million court settlement by the Dean Foods Company.

The Texas-based dairy processing giant is one of two defendants in a class-action antitrust lawsuit brought by farmers in the Northeast in May. The farmers, who filed the case in the U.S.

Sudbury voters elect to keep school open

SUDBURY — The people of Sudbury have spoken, and the town elementary school will continue to teach all 20 students it serves.
Residents voted 110-39 to keep the k-6 Sudbury Country School open on Monday night following a two-hour information meeting held by the Sudbury school board. The vote was scheduled after a petition was presented to the board on Oct. 11 asking voters to consider shuttering the school due to falling enrollment and tuitioning students to other area schools.

Dairy laborers who sought back pay find work in county

CHARLOTTE — Three Mexican farm workers who earlier this month complained to the Vermont Department of Labor that a Charlotte dairy farm hadn’t paid them have found new jobs at an Addison County farm.

Cheryl Connor, co-convener of the Addison County Migrant Farm Worker Coalition, said that there has been an outpouring of community support for the three workers, who filed a claim for $4,494 in unpaid wages in recent months from their former employer, dairy farmers Robert Jr. and David Mack of Charlotte.

Maier takes on health care reform from brand new vantage point

WILLISTON — For the past six years, Rep. Steve Maier has been helping shape the state’s health care reform policy from the Statehouse chambers.

The Middlebury Democrat will now implement that policy in line with the new state job he officially started on Monday: The Department of Vermont Health Access’s (VHA) “Health Care Reform - Health Information Technology Integration Manager.”

“I’m pretty excited to get started,” Maier, 54, said during a phone interview during his first day on the job with the VHA.
