Fuel assistance available to low income Vermonters

WATERBURY — AHS Secretary Al Gobeille and DCF Commissioner Ken Schatz recently announced that Vermont anticipates receiving approximately $18.9 million in federal funds for this year’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) also known as Seasonal Fuel Assistance. This is a three percent increase over last year. The funds will help about 20,000 low-income Vermont households to heat their homes this winter by paying a portion of their home heating bills.

Rule change means more help for addicts

MONTPELIER — In what he called a sign of progress in combating the opioid crisis, Gov. Phil Scott announced this past Monday, Oct. 16, that the state has moved to bolster the ranks of substance abuse counselors by paring back the licensing requirements.

The move was spurred by legislators’ recommendations to the Office of Professional Regulation after hearing that the state’s arcane rules were hindering qualified counselors from landing jobs here, said Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison.

UVM Health Network CEO preaches value of cooperation

BURLINGTON — When Dr. John Brumsted talks about health care reform, he describes trying to get all the health care providers in Vermont and New York to sit around the same dining room table.

Brumsted, the CEO of the University of Vermont Health Network (UVMHN) and the UVM Medical Center, says getting all the providers into one family, together at his table, is the only way he can make progress on improving the health of the region’s population.

Officials warn of new surge in tick population

Three positive behaviors make a difference

The Vermont Department of Health’s 3-4-50 campaign focuses on helping Vermonters live healthier lives by encouraging three positive behaviors — quitting smoking, regular exercise and healthy eating. These habits will help cut down on the debilitating cost of treating the four chronic diseases (cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and lung disease) that cause over 50 percent of deaths statewide.

Enrollment sign-up dates issued for Vermont Health Connect insurance

WATERBURY — This year Oct. 11 marks three weeks until the start of 2018 Open Enrollment for Vermont Health Connect (VHC), the state’s health insurance marketplace. Open Enrollment will run from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15, which is shorter than in past years. Members will have a start date of January 1, 2018.

Vermont offering grants to improve municipal stormwater systems

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has announced the award of nearly $6 million in federal and state grant funds to assist municipalities in their mitigation efforts through the Municipal Highway and Stormwater Mitigation Program. Two towns in Addison County, Bridport and Shoreham, received grants this year for the design and construction of concrete boxes on Basin Harbor Road, and Buttolph Road, respectively.

Unwelcome Northlands students asked to leave VUHS building

VERGENNES — Two Northlands Job Corps students entered Vergennes Union High School on Thursday afternoon through a door that had been left ajar, according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel, and, in Merkel’s words, approached and made two female VUHS students “uncomfortable.”

Vergennes police issued both Job Corps students no-trespass orders to stay off VUHS property and, according to Merkel, were terminated from the Northlands program later that afternoon.

Four Addison County residents joined under the Team PatriWODic banner to finish third among 14 teams at the 2017 Vermonster CrossFit Competition, held in Barre on Sept. 23. The team, pictured on the right above, consisted of (left to right) Steven Beckwith, Liz Sabourin, Alicia Prime and Ryan Francoeur. The competition consisted of four different team events, one that required the quartets to pull a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck up an incline. Click below to see a video of the truck pull.

Is hemp Vermont's next big crop? Middlebury farm plants marijuana cousin

MIDDLEBURY — While lawmakers in Montpelier argue over marijuana legalization, Middlebury dairy farmers Joel Pomainville and Sam Berthiaume are readying harvest of a cousin of marijuana — hemp — that promoters hope could be a new cash crop for Vermont farmers.

“The potential is so huge on this stuff,” said Berthiaume.

Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts, who toured Pomainville and Berthiaume’s 13 acres of hemp on Monday morning, said hemp could be a supplement crop for Vermont’s dairy farmers, like maple syrup.
