Scott considers estate tax to fund waterways cleanup

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott is looking at Vermont’s estate tax as a possible source of funding for the state’s federally mandated water cleanup initiatives.

The tax, which in recent years has generated an average of $20 million annually, is on a “menu” of options the governor is considering for water cleanup, according to his chief of staff, Jason Gibbs.

Mental illness and suicide are subject of talks at two libraries

VERMONT — Between 1996 and 2016, the suicide rate in Vermont increased by more than 48 percent — the second highest increase nationally according to the federal Centers for Disease Control. This rising rate of suicide, paired with the social stigma attached to mental health problems, indicates a need for safe spaces for communities to learn and talk about issues of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

Get outside, enjoy winter on Vt. Free Ice Fishing Day

NORTH HERO — Vermont’s sixth annual Free Ice Fishing Day is Saturday, Jan. 26. The day is geared toward giving new ice anglers an opportunity to try ice fishing before purchasing equipment, but any angler may ice fish on any water body open to ice fishing statewide without a fishing license.

To celebrate, the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is holding an Ice Fishing Festival at Knight Point State Park in North Hero. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages as well as families with kids.

Your dogs may not be able to resist chasing deer

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department reminds dog owners that they must keep their dogs under control to prevent them from chasing deer or moose.

Vermont law prohibits letting your dog run deer or moose and provides that a State Game Warden or other law enforcement officers may shoot a dog that is running deer. In addition, a dog owner may be fined up to $200 for allowing his or her dog to run deer.

Vermont Tech names county students to dean's list

Vermont Tech in Randolph congratulates the following Addison County students for achieving dean's list honors for the fall semester of 2018. These students received a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Hemp growers and processors can now register online

MONTPELIER —  The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is now accepting applications for registration to grow and process industrial hemp for the 2019 registration year. The registration process is online. Hemp growers and processors have separate registration applications. The forms provide VAAFM with the opportunity to collect information about the hemp industry in Vermont, which supports VAAFM’s research as part its Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. The fee to register is $25.00.

Vermont State Police: Troopers: Drunk man drives 100 mph

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police alleged that a South Burlington man was drunk when he was caught driving 100 mph in Addison County last week.

At a little after 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 7, troopers stopped a red Chevy Cruz on Route 7 in New Haven after clocking it at 100 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. Police identified the driver as Michael Reyes, 28, of South Burlington.

MONTPELIER — Addison County lawmakers are largely on the same page with Gov. Phil’s Scott’s stated goals of making Vermont cleaner, more affordable and more populated during the next two years and beyond.

But they want more details from Scott on how he plans to achieve his ambitious objectives — without raising taxes on Vermonters.
