GOP candidates say 'No' to health exchange

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s four candidates for governor agree that something needs to be done about Vermont Health Connect, and now both Republican candidates have made campaign promises to abandon the exchange.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, who is seeking the Republican nomination against Bruce Lisman, a former Wall Street executive, released an ad last Thursday saying that if he becomes governor he will transition Vermont to the federal health exchange or to a multistate exchange.

County senators split on pot legalization bill

Local college entrepreneurs win prizes

BURLINGTON — Two Addison County men who attend Champlain College and a Middlebury College student are sharing $10,000 in prize money awarded last week in a competition for collegiate entrepreneurs. The money will be used to help them launch their respective companies.

Matthew Giles of New Haven and Cullen Jemison of Starksboro, who both attend Champlain College, are the founders of Thermouse. At the first-ever LaunchVT Collegiate Competition, on Feb. 19, they won first place and $7,500.

Vermont dairy farmers awarded for high-quality milk

ESSEX JUNCTION — Vermont dairy farmers were recognized for producing high-quality cow and goat milk at the Dairy Farmers’ Appreciation Banquet on Jan. 28 during the 82nd Vermont Farm Show at the Champlain Valley Fair Grounds. The 2015 overall highest-quality (cow) milk award was presented to Allan and Karen Bathalon of North Troy. The 2015 overall highest-quality goat milk award was awarded to Frank and Karen Huard of Craftsbury.

INDIANAPOLIS — Agriculture plays a key role in our daily lives and in a variety of ways. Next week, more than half a million FFA members will celebrate the role agriculture plays in our lives while sharing their message of agriculture and agricultural education throughout the country.

During National FFA Week, a host of activities are planned to raise awareness about the role the National FFA Organization plays in the development of agriculture’s future leaders and the importance of agricultural education.

Financial institutions contribute funds to FFA

WILLISTON — Vermont FFA (Future Farmers of America) recently received $10,000 from Yankee Farm Credit and CoBank, two cooperative lending institutions in the Farm Credit System.

Bill Scott, Vermont FFA Foundation president, and Suzanne Buck, executive director of Vermont FFA, received the donations from Paul Franklin, Yankee Farm Credit’s board chairperson and George Putnam, president and CEO of Yankee Farm Credit. CoBank and Yankee Farm Credit each contributed $5,000.

Bill would trigger hospital closures

MONTPELIER — Two lawmakers from the Burlington area have introduced a bill that would provide consumers and regulators with more information about the market power of health systems.

Sens. Tim Ashe, D/P-Chittenden, and Michael Sirotkin, D-Chittenden, have introduced S.245, legislation that would require hospitals to notify state regulators and their patients every time the hospital buys a new independent practice.
