Independents have until Aug. 9 to file

VERMONT — Anyone wishing to run for office in Vermont as an independent has until this Thursday to file their nomination papers.

Independent candidates must file a statement of nomination (also known as a petition), consent of candidate form, and financial disclosure forms with the Office of the Secretary of State in order to be placed on the ballot in the general election. Independent candidates for Justice of the Peace file with the town clerk.

Medical mail-back envelopes available

BURLINGTON — The Vermont Department of Health has introduced free prescription medication mail-back envelopes as a safe, simple and secure way to dispose of unwanted and unused medications. Up to eight ounces of medications — either in their original containers, or in a sealed bag — can be put in each pre-addressed, 8x11 inch envelope, which is then mailed off to be destroyed.

Citizen scientists needed to monitor Vermont's turkey broods

MONTPELIER — Wild turkeys are found throughout most of Vermont. To help make sure that the flocks are healthy and well managed, their reproductive success is monitored annually by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department with help from “citizen scientists” who report the number and size of turkey families they see during August.

Milton paper's probe leads to coach citation

MILTON — Following a probe that was sparked by investigative reporting published in the Milton Independent, police cited former Milton youth football program president Matt King on Tuesday for felony embezzlement.

King will be arraigned in September and could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The Milton Independent, a weekly community newspaper, published a story titled “Bucking the Bronco” on May 30 based on five months of reporting.

Clean water advocate Ehlers seeks governorship

Classic British farce performed in Colchester

Philip King’s classic British farce “See How They Run” opened on Aug. 1 at the Saint Michael’s Playhouse in Colchester. The show concludes the 71st season at the Playhouse and will run Aug. 1-4 and Aug. 7-11.

In a small, tightly-knit English village, a plot of mishaps and mistaken identities causes the action to spiral out of control. Involving an American actress, a cockney maid, a dashing soldier, a village gossip, a Russian spy, and a bevy of bishops, deacons, and vicars, “See How They Run” is a tour-de-force comedy not to be missed.

Vermont State Police Log: Domestic disputes lead to assault charges

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to two recent domestic disputes over the past two weeks, both resulting in assault charges.

The first occurred on July 21 in Orwell, at around 6:21 p.m., after troopers received a report of a family fight. After arriving at the scene, troopers determined that Amber Thomas, 22, of Orwell had physically assaulted a family member, before damaging two vehicles, smashing the home’s windows with a shovel, and driving away.

Cliffs clear to hike, climb again Aug. 1

MONTPELIER — Hikers and rock climbers can return to Vermont cliffs starting Wednesday, Aug. 1, now that peregrine falcon nesting season has ended. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has confirmed that all the young falcons have learned to fly and will not be disturbed by human presence on the cliffs.

In Addison County, nesting sites now open include Deer Leap in Bristol, Mt. Horrid at the top of the Brandon Gap and Snake Mountain in Weybridge/Addison.
