Vermont State Police Log: Troopers make DUI arrests in Ferrisburgh, New Haven and Rutland

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited four people for driving under the influence in four separate incidents in Addison County on June 20, 23 and 24.

While troopers were conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh on Wednesday, June 20, they pulled over a car driven by Randall Raymond, 56, of Salisbury at 9:25 p.m. for sobriety screening. Police cited Raymond for DUI.

Vermont gets $3M for election cybersecurity

MONTPELIER — Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy on June 20 announced that the state has received $3 million in State Election Security Grants appropriated by Congress to bolster election security efforts and replace aging election infrastructure.

The Outside Story: A slow start for snapping turtles

One moonless May evening, my husband and I walked down to our local pond, flashlights in hand, to look for toads. We were delighted to discover hundreds of them, floating, darting, and jockeying for position in an explosion of courtship. Their surround-sound trills left our ears ringing.

The toads were frenzied, focused only on each other, and highly concentrated in one small, shallow section of the pond, which prompted my husband to wonder if they weren’t awfully vulnerable to predators that way.

“Boundaries” is a family story shot through with smiles and a bucket of eccentricity. With lesser actors, this movie could have fallen flat. But the truly good cast makes it jump alive to the point that we roll between feeling sadness and affection.

Time to remember poison parsnip

BURLINGTON – State Health and Agriculture officials want Vermonters to steer clear of a common weed often seen along Vermont roadsides. The so-called “poison parsnip” packs a punch that can leave you with the equivalent of a second-degree burn.

Formally known as wild parsnip, these plants grow along roadsides and unmaintained areas throughout Vermont, with flowers that look like a yellow version of Queen Anne’s lace.

Keeping chickens means taking precautions

VERMONT — Keeping a small flock of chickens at home to provide eggs and meat has become increasingly popular, but many first-time small-scale poultry farmers are discovering that several species of wildlife like the taste of chicken as much as we do. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department urges poultry owners to use electric fencing and follow other precautions to protect their birds from predation.

Vt. Congressman Welch sees immigrant children fenced at Mexico border

TEXAS — “Appalling” and “un-American,” those are the words Vermont Congressman Peter Welch used to describe conditions in a processing center in southern Texas where children have been separated from their parents.

Welch spoke with the St. Albans Messenger by phone Sunday evening after visiting a processing center known as “the Icebox,” while en route to the Walmart in Brownsville, Texas, where teenagers are being held.

Vt. sugarmakers lead the nation in maple syrup production – again

ADDISON COUNTY — The United States Department of Agriculture’s final tally of maple sugar production is in and Vermont is, once again, the nation’s top producer. 


But even as they mark the Green Mountain State’s preeminence, local sugarmakers reported a strong 2018 season overall despite “wobbly” weather and “splotchy” production.
